Hey folks, I am getting ready to go on my second missions trip (Ukraine), and I am expected to bring along more than I did for my first trip to India.
Taking into consideration that not all of my routines have to have a Gospel message (I will have many opportunities to do magic and juggling without a message), what routines would anyone suggest? I have a list of the routines that I already do, but would love to hear more from you folks if you have the time. What packs flat and plays big? What could I make up, and leave there, taught to one of the folks I meet there who also perform? Any thoughts, I'd love to hear. DonB! |

Are you looking for stage things or just close-up stuff? I am going to Mexico at the end of the month. I still have to get some Mexican money.

I don't know how far you will get with Flash paper these days.
But lots of simple things like the stop lite tricks, Svengali decks, hot rods, TT, and small silks, hank ball, and some lager silks, even a silk fountain, some IT and Loops, and I certainly second the use of D'lites. And cups and balls, if you perform them, can make for a whole routine. All of these pack pretty small. Be sure to let us know when you are leaving and when you expect to return, so we can pray for you and your efforts for the Kingdom. BroDavid

Bill in lemon (or lime or whatever fruit you can get your hands on) is good. It's visual, easy to follow, can be done for any size crowd, and the routine can last for several minutes. In India, I did Doug Malloy's Lemon Game. I had to leave out the bag of lemons, since Indian lemons are the size of a golf ball. But it really doesn't hurt the routine, and it packs smaller without it.
The 50 or 100-foot rope escape is another pack-small play-big routine that goes over well. It's already been mentioned, but mouth coils are great. |

What could I do with mouth coils? I think I will bring my D'lites. Flash paper...no. We are going on a plane and I don't think I would bring that. I was thinking, magic mints? They are a normal looking prop. Also, for me in Mexico, I am bring my Scotch and Soda. It uses the Mexican Centavo.
You might want to try and get some of the oney they use in Ukraine. They are many tricks you could do with that. I am thinking about using them for a bill switch. Not too sure about that though. -Tyler |

I've been advised to avoid using playing cards, as many of the Christians that will be hosting us are against the use of cards. I know, it's a difficulty that could be overcome, but I've decided I will do what makes them happy. Otherwise, I can think of 20 or 30 excellent card routines to use over there.
Oh well. DonB! |

I was asked to avoid any use of playing cards when I first went to Cambodia. I used "horrible" uneven card stiff cardboard Old Maid cards instead at the spur of the moment to do a "do not gamble" message (that was during my 1st serious year of trying to learn amgic beyond the self working gimmicks. The following year, the missionaries and leaders were more than pleased to have me do card magic - as I was able to use them to teach positive messages. I am going back in a few weeks time for 11 days and I have packed my cards (including a pack of spider man themed cards - to use with kids)
I would suggest brnging your cards along, just in case you need it. You can privately show how you intend to use them to whoever is in charge and see what he or she says. If not acceptable, it is no big loss as a pack of cards is light and you can hide them away. But if their eyes light up and they see how powerful the message can be sign cards, then .... enjoy!:-)
Many Blessings!!

Cut & restored rope to symbolize sin seperating us from God and Jesus restoring our relationship and Professor's Nightmare to show how all are equal in the eyes of God or how all sin, small, medium and big are equal in the eyes of God.

I will have the opportunity to use my close-up magic in the daily Bible camps we will be running, sometimes with a message, and other times just as fun interludes while kids are between activities. I am also performing in two evening programs at the concert hall in Zhaskov, programs made up of singers and other musicians. My performance stuff will be in addition to their music. Once again, some of what I do will be just entertainment, and some will present the Gospel. I took Andre Kole's 3-ball illustration to India last year, reworded it to fit my performnig style and got a lot of mileage out of it, so I am taking it again this year. Thanks everyone for your input. It helps to know others have gone before me, doing similar things. DonB! |

Well as far as flash papper, you can write names of certian sins on it and then talk about the power of forgiveness and poof... the stuff isn't gonna ignite on a plane or anything so there isn't any real risk...the others choices are also good. professor nite mare is also good, lots of possible themes to spring from it...

Hi DonB,
Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what your doing and have things set up well. Are you looking for more effects and ideas for parlor/stage routines ? I think T & R newspaper is always a good one. The Appearing Bowling Ball from pad sketch is great too, for a stunning visual effect and a nice drawing souvenir for a spectator. doesn't pack very flat however. Silk and TT effects are great too, if you have a nice routine worked out. Just a few ideas but I wish you well and pray that your trip is succesful. I know that prayer is very important for those going out and for those that you will be in contact with. Remember to let us know all about it when you get back too. I am going on a missions trip from June 24 to July 7 to China with 9 others from my church. As of now, there is nothing planned as far as me doing any magic performing. I am planning on taking some close-up effects and decided not to worry about larger parlor type of effects at this time. I am planning to pack as light as possible and every magic effect I take I am assuming it could get lost, damaged, or given away. The close-up items I am taking are as follows: CardToon ropes some silks TT's for silk effects and hard type for bill switch Pen Thru bill (I have a gospel presentation for this effect) various coins for flurries and coins across King of Hearts monte scotch & soda deck of cards invisible deck mental photography deck (i have a gospel presentation for this) rubberbands loops - floating bill/ring/card very dependant on conditions but I am taking some pearl strands - for making pearl poodles disintegration chamber and my handling of a gospel presentation that's about it and most of this stuff I can have on me very easily. I am open to any suggestions or ideas too. By the way, this is my first missions trip and I am very excited about it. I have been to Taiwan and Japan before on business trips but this is my first time going in this capacity and I am going primarily to be available to serve but will look for opportunities to share some magic too. Sorry for piggybacking on your post, DonB. I hope nobody minds too much. GlenD

The needle balloon is an excellent illustration and attention getter. Someone earlier mentioned the cut and restored rope trick. Professors nightmare, is excellent. ("WARNING" never put slush powder in a lotta bowl) Slush powder, used by itself, and or in conjunction with a lotta bowl is good.("WARNING" never put slush powder in a lotta bowl) Gospel coloring book, alone or with disappearing crayons. These are the simplist and flattist packing things I could think of, easy to teach, and work almost immediately You have to take in consideration that these kids are not bombarded with as much magic/media as the kids here are. Godspeed Steve Ps I was in Eastern Europe several years ago, and was amazed by the people there. They are very warm, friendly, open, and receptive. They are very good people, and I hope to return to see some lifetime friends made while there. |

With the new Airline restrictions, are you all having problems getting past the inspectors with the needle (from needle thru balloon) and flash paper. They now have a ban on lighters.
Bringing silk effects and paper tear illusions would be good to take. Ken |

I fly a lot to perform, and haven't had major problems. TSA searches at least one of my bags almost every trip, but everything makes it through, so far.
The new lighter restriction is an anoyance, but it's easy enough to pick up a lighter when I arrive. I don't do the needle thru balloon, but I do the bill in lemon. If a knife is acceptable in baggage, I'm sure a giant needle is OK. (Checked, not cary-on.) I have to believe flash paper is a no-no. I don't know if they'd catch it, but I wouldn't try it. When traveling overseas, you also have to be ready for the restrictions on the other side. In India, for example, you can't have batteries in your carry-on. You can have them in checked baags, but any checked electronics have to have their batteries removed. -Brad |

HI,
A missions magic thought: Be careful that in choosing your effects you don't use objects or themes that offend or bring up imagery you don't intend. In other cultures many times things take on new meaning. Especially cultures steeped in superstition, voodoo, etc. You may unwittingly "conjure up" the wrong ideas in your audiences. Do a bit of research and avoid such a dilemna. Good luck. -Ed

I'll be going for a ten day trip to Cambodia in 2 weeks time. Mostly more serious teaching duties but preparing for any opportunity to use magic for teaching . evangelism.
Any ideas for simple effects to teach local leaders for use in evangelism? Must be simple and available. So far I am planning (with caution as Ed (UFO) made mention, I will double check the cultural aspect when I get there - can't be too car3eful even if this is my 3rd trip) 1. Ticket to heavan / hell 2. Thread through the eye of the needle (rope) 3. Do as I do impossible knot (rope) This will be different from performing as it will involve teaching the effect. Don't want to reveal anything I should not and want to be very selective. Any input would be welcome Thanks
Many Blessings!!

Any production prop for silks is light.
Needle thru Balloon and if you put a partially inflated heart inside you can talk about how sin destroys the heart. You might want to brainstorm and see how you could restore the balloon w/heart, but it would take a table with cover. I saw a video where the performer used a smiley faced balloon and when he popped it, he put the pieces of the ballon on the table and then gathered them up, but he picked up a duplicate and reinflated it. I like the Jumping Knot of Pakistan (Daryl has it for sale and you can adapt his moves). It's light and you can show how God sent an abassador (Christ) to earth to save us. Knot comes off to show crucifiction; knot jumps back on (resurrection). White knot becomes part of the red rope. Disciples continue to share the good news. T & R Newspaper. DT to change red silk to white (Isaiah 1:18). Version of G'Ma's Necklace with 2 ropes & 3 colored balls---God, Sin, Man and red silk. Silk represents blood of Christ that covers sin. Pull ropes, Sin falls off, God & Man are restored. Panama rope trick: Routine in Greater Gospel Magic (GGM)--it's good. "Jesus Died For My Sin" routine with 12 jumbo picture cards--Again from GGM plus other variations by Laflin. I also make a production box using modular origami to make a cube. As I assemble the box in front of the audience, I illustrate a spirit filled church, but you can adapt it for missions. The size and durability of the paper cube limits it to spring flowers or silks, but for missions it's light and easy to pack. If you are interested, write me at leftypickles@hotmail.com God bless
