A friend showed me a video of Ricky Jay performing a 5 hand poker deal trick called Cheating at Poker...it looked like it was shot for a TV show.
Lots of great false cuts and shuffles. When the clip opens it says RICKY JAY - CON EXPERT Does anyone know what show this was on? |

Is this the playing in an appartment in which a few people come and play, one after the other, against Ricky Jay (for some bucks, if I remember correctly)?

No Jonathan. It is the Alaskan poker deal.

Is Ricky sitting around a poker table with several other players, and does he shuffle half the cards face up and half face down? If so, then you're probably looking at a clip from his Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women special. Michael Weber is also in that special and would have been seated at the table to Ricky's right if I remember correctly.
I believe the effect belongs to Persi Diaconis, and isn't in print, though it has circulated widely. Jason

Ok,,,He is sitting at a table alone. Does multiple face up into face down shuffles,,,then does a five hand poker deal.
all the dealt cards are face up EXCEPT his which are face down,,,,and he ends up with the Aces. when the clip begins at the bottom of the screen it says RICKY JAY - CON EXPERT.. I thought i,ve seen all of his TV specials but didn't remember this clip. |

That IS Persi's effect, but that isn't from the Learned Pigs special. I'm not familiar with what clip you have, though the effect is the same as the one from the LPAFW special.

I think this was one of the segments featured on "The Secret Cabaret" ... a 1990 Channel 4 series in the UK. Ricky Jay had a segment such as this in each episode.

I saw Ricky in his one man show in LA this year, and he showed a clip from a movie he was in, called, I believe, "The Ranger, the Cook and the Hole in the Sky", which looked to be a Western, and Ricky played the cook. Someone wanted to play poker with him and he tried to dissuade him from doing so, saying "You don't want to play with me." When the other fellow insisted, Ricky then did a poker deal that was simply brilliant. And turned to the guy and said, "That's why you don't want to play poker with me." I'm probably misquoting it, since I'm doing it from memory, but that was the gist of it. Fun clip to watch.

Love the scene from that movie! I've looked in several Video Stores for it but no ones ever heard of it! I see it can be had on Amazon and a few other sites so I think I'll order it!

Nice video clips - thanks for the links. I love watching Ricky Jay work not only is he great with a deck of cards - everything he does - he makes what he does play really well. In my opinion he is as great of an entertainer is he is with skill with a deck of cards.
I love watching Ricky Jay work.

Alaskan Poker is definitely Persi's. He did it for me a long time ago when he was living in New York. He discussed the handling... which was/is way above my pay scale (!) ... However, not being a riffle shuffler... I devised a way using a SLOP SHUFFLE, which I used in some of my early lectures. I called it SLOP POKER.
Think I'll revive it and put into my next book. It was great to see the video clip of Ricky doing it.
