My father-in-law, Fred Leonard (who I love as if he were my own dad!) is having a VERY difficult time. About 8 weeks ago, he had a massive heart attack. One artery was completely closed, so that a quadrant of his heart got no blood at all for approximately 12 hours. (He has permanent damage to his heart as a result). I took him to the hospital, where they immediately began to operate. They put in a stent and were going to give him quintuple bypass surgery, but he died on the table. After four minutes they revived him, and had to forego the bypass surgery. He was in the hospital for another week and then they sent him home to rest and regain his strength, putting him on meds (blood thinners, choleterol reducers and something to help his heart heal) and a special diet.
Thursday before last, he went in for his quintuple bypass surgery. The surgery went well, and he was showing rapid improvement. In fact, he was moved out of the ICU in only two days. However, after that they just could not get his blood oxygen level up to where it should be. He has been on oxygen the entire time, and every time they try to take him off it, it would drop dangerously low and he would pass out. So they called in another cardiology specialist and a respiratory specialist, who ran a battery of tests and x-rays over the last two days. This was very discouraging for Fred, as they had originally told him he would probably get to come home Thursady or Friday. Today they told us what was causing the problem. He has a pretty large hole in his heart. They think it developed during the heart attack and was small enough at first that no one noticed it and has been growing, especially since the bypass surgery. So he has to undergo surgery to repair this hole on Monday, May 16. Because of the bad oxygen levels and his weakened state, as well as the rate the hole seems to be enlarging, this surgery is going to be very serious and risky, but he will likely die if he doesn't have it. Further, he is going to have to stay in the hospital for another week or two and then in the Elks Rehab Hospital for a wekk or two after that. As you can imagine, he is terribly diheartened, and this is quite a blow for our family, as he has always been like superman--everyone was shocked that he had a heart attack because he was so strong and healthy. Fred is very dear to my heart (and of course to my wife's and her family's), and he is the best man I have ever had the privilege to know. I am asking everyone of faith to pray with us (and the thousands of other people across the world whose lives he has impacted through his giving, service and ministry over the years) particularly through the next 48 hours. It would mean a great deal to me and my family. Thank you. I will keep you posted on his progress. God bless, Scott

Scott,
I have added you father-in-law's name to a Worldwide Prayer Circle under the care of Self-Realization Fellowship at: http://www.yogananda-srf.org/aboutsrf/prayer.cgi You may find some strength in the words of Mahatma Gandhi: "No effort is complete without prayer—-without definite recognition that the best human endeavor is of no effect if it has not God’s blessing behind it." Know that by marshalling the prayers of those throughout the world who love God and care for their fellow man that God will work his will to create the greatest good. Trust his wisdom and find peace in the knowledge that however little we understand, his will is always right. Wesley James |

Vinny, Thomas, Wesley and Alton,
Thank you all for your concern and support. It is very encouraging. We spent the day with Fred today and he was in remarkably good spirits. We go back to the hospital tomorrow morning at 6. They're getting him into surgery sometime in the morning--we don't exactly when yet. They expect it will take six hours minimum, so we'll be in the waiting room all day. I'll post again tomorrow night. Thank you all, Scott

Thank you all so much for your prayers, thoughts, support and words of encouragement. Fred had his surgery today. They were able to use a different procedure that wasn't as invasive and that doesn't require so much recovery time. He went through it with flying colors. In fact, before the surgery, on 100% oxygen, his blood oxygen level was in the mid to upper 80 percentile (they want it to be at least 92). After the surgery, on 10% oxygen, he's holding strong around 93%! If that stays through the night, they will take him off oxygen completely. If his levels hold after that, he will finally get to come home! So remember him in your prayers--he's not quite out of the woods yet, but so far he is doing wonderfully.
Thank you again, Scott F. Guinn

I am happy to report that the not only was the procedure a success, it "fixed the problem." We can now conclusively say that it was the hole (actually a "flap" as they found out later) that was the cause of the low blood oxygen levels. It was repaired and Fred responded almost immediately. Almost miraculously fast, in fact--so much so that he got to come home from the hospital today, without having to go to the rehab hospital!
Thank you all so much for your prayers! I know they are what made the difference. Even the doctors were stunned at how quickly Fred rebounded. Thanks again, Scott
