Hey everyone-
I just found out there is going to be a demonstration and class on the Japanese art of tying, hojojutsu, at the end of this month here in Chicago. It should be interesting, though albeit the forum is going to be a bit bizzare!! PM me if you are interested in info.... Allan |

It's very beautiful work.
I was once tied by someone who specialized in it...almost 25 minutes for the tie...about 12 seconds for the escape.

Read David Straightjacket's thread about his adventures in China for an account of being challenged by two guys who >really< specialised in hojojutsu, along with some photos that are definitely not for the squeamish. Fascinating stuff.

I would love to attend but I'm afraid that I can't. Allan could you get me some information on the class? Maybe they will be coming to NY for a seminar, or there might even be an instructional video available.

I will definitely get as much information as possible for everyone...I'm trying to rearrange my schedule right now so that I can go to it myself since I was supposed to be up in Montreal the weekend this is going on.
Tony-I will see if I can get some info for you if they are going to be doing anything in NY as well...As for instructional videos, I know that there are some available from here: http://www.bugei.com/product_77_detailed.htm Though I have never watched these, so I am not sure as to their quality... Hey thanks Allan and Ros for the video links. They look pretty good as an introduction and I'll definitely be adding them to my escape library. I've found some instructional sources here in New York as well. Most of them seem to be in the "fetish" community but I'm still looking for some more traditional Japanese "Bushido" approaches. I think the workshop in Chicago is being conducted by the "fetish" community anyway so I might have to just swallow that lump in my throat and keep an open mind that most of those familiar with these techniqes in this day and age will be from that particular culture. I guess a good escape student needs to learn whatever he or she can, wherever and whenever he or she can.

Tony;
I got most of my grounding challenging "bondage experts" in the fetish scene, but do bear in mind that the priorities there are more toward doing a tie that's safe and interesting for both the tier and bound person rather than one that's neccesarily effective, and in any case tops in that scene aren't used to tying up people who actually make a serious effort to get out, so you get that handy combination of people who consider themselves experts but who aren't often tested in real terms. The guys David encountered didn't mess about; they'd trained to tie people up effectively, and that's precisely what they did; safe and interesting wasn't part of the deal. The fetish scene isn't that scary (well, relatively speaking), the people there are friendly because it's all about providing a safe, controlled environment. Don't judge the scene by either what the tabloids make out or the porn industry's idea of fetish, neither of them get it. |

Thanks Helen
Yeah, I would love a challenge from some fetish type Hojujutsu 'experts'. Waaaaaayyyy too showy and complex to really hold someone with a will to escape. Like Harley said, 25 minutes to tie you up, a few seconds to escape. I don't have any real life experience of the fetish movement, but it seems to me that people tied up in those kind of situations don't want to escape, the play acting is part of the fantasy. The ties don't need to be great in real life, they just need to look and feel right. As Helen correctly pointed out. The guys that went at me were the real deal. No messing around. Just simple, and very effective tying techniques. That said, there might still be stuff to learn at the event. The basic technique should be there, however embelished. If I could go I definatly would. Though I might be tempted to show them up a bit David

After some more research, I found out the Chicago event is being put on by the fetish community. I was hoping it would be martial arts based, but alas and alack, it is not. According to the website, it looks like this is the first annual bondage convention. The classes they have running all weekend include the hojojutsu as well as a myriad of other "tying" forums! I agree with David, I think the ties this community uses are more for show than for actually restraining someone. I am still going to try and go and see if there is any useful information...one can never have too much knowledge on escapes! Now I just need to approach the subject of me attending this with my wife..."no really, it is for RESEARCH..."

David's right about the motives for being tied, being different.
I was once asked by a dominatrix, to co-produce a series of movies. I declined, but she showed me a bunch of catalogues for her toys. WOW! There were some beeeeeautiful toys! She pointed out to me, the difference between the catalogues for straights, and the ones for gays. The straights, she said, are into being bound, so that they are out of their normal sense of control, a relief of sorts, letting somebody else take over. The gay bondage toys were more oriented toward inflicting pain. I'm not into that particular scene, but on numerous occasions, I've been taken to bondage and leather shops, as part of doing PR. It's so much fun! The toys! One time I was put in leather hospital type restraints on ankles and wrists, hanging spread-eagled in a doorway. I had to wedge myself into the frame, and use some climbing technique, to get myself up to where I had enough slack to be able to twist a hand around and undo one cuff. But that was all it took to get out. The right footwear makes all the difference in the world.

LOL @ Allan. Sounds like the perfect excuse. "But darling, it is for research purposes..."
Thanks Helen, I have not idea or experience with the bondage area so that info was very valuable to me. Harley, why didn't you tellthen that you would do the movie in return for payment plus some of the toys. :o) David - I have some idea's for a show that could take Escapes to a different level. Will speak to you over the pints' when I get over to the UK. I would like your views on my idea's. Regards Wolflock
