Look in the card section under "Focus",
there is a query about it there, and response from me. Basically, it is good. Paul. |

Is the "Shinkansen" effect described in Focus identical to the new stand alone release?
I thought the Focus version used 1 gaffed card, whereas the new release comes with 7 specially printed cards. ... and can someone tell me if Psi-Con Ruse is in Focus too? Steve |

The original version uses a total of seven cards. That's probably what they mean.

Psi-Con Ruse is a clean simple way of performing the Dr. Jack's trick without carrying that stand with you. You use a book and the positioning is both clever in method as well as showy in presentation. |

Shinkansen is, IMHO, the best "selected card across" I have ever seen. It is easy, and direct. Only two of the cards are gaffed. I think that this is better than Red See Passover, which is a similair effect.

I have been playing with Shinkansen for about a week now. The handling is extremely simple. The direction booklet is clearly written with excellent illustrations. It is a really good trick. Some ads have said that the spectator thinks of a card, like Princess Cards. The Spec. does not think of a card. However, she does make a random selection, wink. It resets immediately, which is great for the strolling guys, but because of the force, the outcome will be the same. I recommend Shinkansen. It is clever, direct and the effect is uncluttered.

Effect: Four red-backed cards are displayed; they're counted and held by a spectator
Another set of blue-backed cards is shown, and a second spectator simply thinks of any one. The packets are held by the spectators, who stand far apart from each other. With the utmost fairness, the mentally chosen card vanishes from the blue packet and appears in the red! —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— My take: The card is forced, they don't 'think of any one'. But, the clever patter by Phil/Max will have them 'remember' they thought of any card. It's heavily gaffed and you need to do a glide, the Marlo/Osbourne display and....a half pass. You need not only to do these sleights perfectly, you need to be well versed in audience management to make it go smoothly and without them wanting to touch the cards afterwards. Phil/Max of course can do it all! Knowing all that, the cards included are excellent/clever, the booklet is beautifully produced, illustrated, with clear instructions. If you want to become a better card magician, this is an EXCELLENT trick to accomplish that. It will also help reduce/eliminate your magicians guilt, because it has so much going on to feel guilty about. Afraid of roller coasters? Force yourself to ride one 50 times and....you won't be as skittish. It's a perfect trick after you've won them over. Once they like and trust you, they'll believe you. Clarke |

Clarke,
You probably already know about this, but Steven Keyl has put up a website where he reviews magic books. His (excellent) review of Focus includes a video of Shinkansen: http://www.magicbookreport.com/2012/02/f......ldstein/ I hope you find it useful/enjoyable. Larry S. |

Some people dislike the handling for the second spectator's choice, however there are people who prefer this to Blaine's Strange Traveler.
I love Strange Traveler so I dunno if this will be better or stronger.

I seem to be one of the few that don't have Focus. I'm going to have to remedy that soon.

Well, after watching it twice, I love effect but dislike one thing. It's the inconsistency of how you count the cards between the first and second pile.
I know that you have to count the second pile that way in order to have it works.

If you buy "focus" can you make your own cards or do you need to buy the marketed effect?

One of the gaffs might be little difficult to make yourself. Max suggests to make it by splitting the cards. The other one is a simple DF with no particular card values (if I understood everything correctly). Hope that helps.
