Well, after reading all of the postings on the Axtell magic drawing board, I am finally about to purchase one. I was wondering, however, where you position it in your show? I think that David Ginn has used it as a warm-up. Is this the best spot, or do you use it in the middle, or as a closer?

I've always used mine in Middle. I have a strong opener & closer using multiple animals (rabbit, chinchilla, dove & timor monitor) but it just blows them (the kids) away. It gives an adrenelen rush to the kids whenever you use it. Move it around during your routine and find what works for you and when you want EXTRA Energy in kids reactions.

I do 4 routines in my 50 min show, the board is the 2nd routine.

Middle as well. Mainly because I use the birthday child in the opener and closer, and the drawing board doesn't really use a volunteer as such.

Closing "effect" - actually they think the magic is over and we're doing a drawing/guessing game ("Who's good at drawing? Who's good at guessing? Who's good for nothing?") - then I "lock up" the smarty-aleck talking birthday cake in his case because I'm tired of his silly jokes, and we move on to blowing up a big plastic inflated figure for the birthday kid, some quick games that finally everybody wins, and they get their prize when they line up to pet the (previously produced) bunny.

I personally open with it as it is such a strong opener. I start with music playing as I walk out dusting off things. The writing on the board says magic show today. I get excited and ask the kids that I can not WAIT for the magician to show up and how cool it is going to be to see a magic show. They laugh and I continue on. I then pretend to spot the b-day child and motion (pantomime style) that I will draw his or her picture. I make the drawing and pout a mustache on only to go oops and erase it. Funny things like this as I create the picture.
Then I look away as the eyes start to move. I say aww naw it can not be real. The drawing then says, "yes I am". I said well if you are real why not introduce us to everyone. So in a way the drawing acts like an MC for the opening of the performance. I then have fun erasing the drawing as it protests that it does not want to be erased. It makes for a fun and interactive opener that works quite well for my wife and I. Kyle

I have used it at the end of my birthday shows. But this library season I am using it to open my show. The drawing is going to be a book instead of a face. Axtell did the voice over work for me. I have it all programed in my showtech.
My first show is tomorrow with the new library show summer 2005. Not bragging but I have 98 libraries until Aug. 8th. By the time I am done Axtell(voice) and I will be tired of each other. LOL So anwser the question ,it is strong opener, closer, middle. Put it anywhere and it will Kill. Ken |

I use it second to last because it gets the kids all excited for an energy-filled closer.

I just don't see how anyone can tell you where and how to use the effect in your show. You need to analyze your own show and determine the best place.
Depending on how you use it, it can be used anywhere.

That is very true. It is up to your own imagination and your personal style. You must also take in consideration the pace of your show and routine it so that the show flows smoothly from routine to routine.

Its funny I've been using it as a closer for years and frankly never even thought of opening with it, but it sounds very promising.
Kyle, you have some wonderful ideas. I really like the idea of writing magic show today. not just those words or the positioning in the show but writing something on the board other than a drawing of a face and then launching into a rountine. thanks. oliver |

Ypu are most welcome. If it works for you, feel free to use it. I like to try to give a purpose to a lot of what I do. I also like having the drawing board out in plain site for as long as possible. I place mine on an easle with the words magic show today. When doing festivals, I place on it the showtime as well. Now this bpard or sign has a purpose and a function. The audience has seen it and it is not new or foreign to them. When it is in plian site for a while, by the time I pick it up to begin my routine, the audience perceives it as being nothing more then a sign. For me it is a pyschological thing for the audience and I tend to get even better response. It also gives me a reason to go over and pick the board up and look at it.
