Hmmm; I KNOW there's another on some site on the 'net (which is a bit like saying it's in Texas!) All I can say is that the third one is not mine, and it's not Gene Poinc's. (A senior moment: I can't even remember who wrote it!) |

I think the mannikin Mcabre is in one of the Cameron books, and also in the Compleate Invocation.
I must ocnfess to having used a similar effect in a LARP gaming convention a number of years ago before I ever knew it was done in the bizarre circles! Mine used red threads, and dryer lint (sort of a giant dust bunny) with a small red ballon heart inside- CPR don't'cha know! my helper had the remote while I did the chant and spells....all oogly booglly type- I won the contest- they were all rolling on the floor in agony so hard they could not deny my vast powers of.... No clay in mine, but if you PM I will share my humble method. k

What about Paul Harris' Elevator effect where in the end nothing is left behind but their shadows(souls) the A, 2, 3 of spades. One might rework it with the J,Q,K of hearts/spades.

I suppose that same effect could be re-done with tarot cards?

Khopri - love it. Absolutely love it.
Was thinking about a possible finale, and thought I'd have to do something that he CANNOT do to best him. So what is it that the devil cannot do? Make a child laugh, maybe? Also: Was thinking this might be a pretty cool card manip routine on stage. If the devil wears a mask, we could have a guest magician in every town we play, who could do the identity reveal at the end of the routine. This might only work well at conventions and/or the Castle, but man - wouldn't it be amazing to see two remarkably precise manip routines, have the mask removed and see Jeff McBride in cameo? *grin* What do y'all think of THAT? Yes? No? And other than the competition, how could we portray the soul concept here? Other than the signing of the contract, I mean.

In the close up world, the familiar "Gambler vs Magician" effect translates easily into "Magician vs the Devil" and even works with the Charlie Daniels tune. For stage use, I'd suggest reading "Carter beats the Devil" for the scene where the world's greatest magician does just that on stage.
Rather than a lawyer, I'd have the Devil be a heckler. Or better, a critic styled after Simon on American Idol. Alternatively, imagine if the devil is a conniving agent, representing the dancer the magician wants as her assistant. The challange is taken in order to free the assistant's soul. The rest just about writes itself. This is not exactly what Misty is looking for, but it has to do with souls, I contributed this bit to the book on "Bounce/no Bounce balls" I figure you all might have missed that one, so briefly, the idea is: The magician enters, bouncing a rubber ball. He talks about a man he once met who claimed he collected the souls of people, and even things. "He said that if you look deep into an object, you can see the thing that make it what it is. He claimed he could remove that thing." So speaking, the magician reaches "into" the rubber ball, and pulls out a small clear crystal ball of the same size. He drops the ball to the floor, and it lands with a thud. He takes the small crystal to a cabinet holding various sizes of crystal balls. He places the smallone on a stand, and removes a larger one. "This one," he says, "is said to contain the soul of a dancer." True to form, the crystal dances across the magician's hands (contact juggle) it then begins to glow brightly. The magician places the glowing ball in a box with transparent sides. He shuts the box, and we see the shadow form of the dancer emerge from the light and burst through the box. Maybe something you can use in there?

Thank you, Curtis.
You know, combining that with Khopri's suggestion would make for an interesting storyline - perhaps telling the story of a loved one who sold his/her soul, showing the faceoff and the battle, picking up the book he leaves behind, magically extracting the crystal (their soul, so we're staying on concept here) from the pages of the book, and bringing the loved one back to 'life'. The concept of the 'identity' of the ball is also intriguing here. The new show we're writing deals heavily with identity, and these suggestions are extraordinarily relevant.

Misty,
What you are looking for might be similar to two of my routines in my Bizarre Bazaar column in the e-zine Visions (www.online-visions.com), The Devil Deals A Hand and The Devil And Daniel Webester (based on the Stephen Vincent Benet story). You may want to check those out. Or you may not. Having freely given away literally hundreds of routines, I was taken aback by the following comment, made by someone called Hart, who claims to be a magician but is really an insurance peddler: “He (Peter) gave me a routine once and after I read it I knew why he gave it away.” That comment was made on The Magic Café on May 27, 2005 and should leave no room for doubt why I am reluctant to pass along any further articles. If that’s the kind of “thanks” I can look forward to, I don’t know why I bother. |

Peter, I have been an appreciator of your routines, suggestions, and insights for a very long time. The fact that you'd receive treatment like that is not only a shame, but a grave mistake on that individual's part, considering the wealth of knowledge you possess.
I am sorry that happened, and am traveling to your suggestions now. I am delighted to make your acquaintance, send warm thoughts your way, and am trusting this individual will receive exactly what he puts forth. Thank you, Peter. And please - don't let one rotten grape spoil the bunch for you. You're a source of lifeblood and tremendous contribution here. We would all suffer if you withheld your suggestions! Sincerely, Misty Just read the Daniel Webster story, and will incorporate it into my close up, especially as we develop the stage routine. Wonderful idea, and thank you! Gotta love 'em when they're max effect + simple handling. I could not, however, find the Devil Deals a Hand effect, though. Am I perhaps just overlooking it? Thanks again, Misty

Since we're on the subject, you may want to check out 'Soulsnatcher' from Capricornian Tales. It's not a light tale but boy, is it effective...

One thing that I thought was clever. Another member, BrainMagos (Panthomas), was telling members of another forum about a piece of performance art that he had done.
Dressed in black, he went to a public station with an empty bottle and approached people. He asked them if they would sell their souls for a certain amount of money. The interesting thing was that most people refused. One person, drunk, agreed. BrainMagos had him breathe into the bottle, then corked it. He paid the man, and had him sign a receipt certifying that he had sold his soul for money. Interesting, at least to me... |
