Hello to everyone!
Dai Vernon in one of his Revelations video series is actually describing an effect he used a lot to do in the past that is more or less a mental magic trick. Just to introduce you a bit into it (if it happens that you don't remember it), there are 5 cards on the table and the spectator is asked to mentally select one of them. Dai Vernon insists on placing a bet on naming the spectator's card. He makes a bet because he wants to ensure that the spectator will think and select a card and not just randomly select it. I must say that I love this routine and I use it with success. The questions I have are: 1) Do you use it at all and if yes what is your opinion on it? 2) What happens if by any chance the naming of the selected card goes wrong - shall I just admit that it doesn't work all the time and proceed with another effect? 3)How bad is to admit that you failed to succeed in one rather difficult prediction given that you will have some other successful routines before and after the failed one? Thanks a lot in advance for any advices and ideas. Bests, aware |

The Vernon thing is cute.
But really it is a gateway into full blown think a card I'll tell you what it is ype of presentation. Lu Brent's version destroyed me years ago. And inspired me come up with my own. There is no shame in failing. In fact I do so very often. I do realize this is unacceptable and difficult for others. But if you are attempting the truly impossible people give you a bit of leeway. If you attempt the impossible--I agree.
But a 1 in 5 is not impossible. It's pretty much run of the mill. So it is inherently unimpressive unless it is very clean. I would suggest Andy Nyman for a more up-to-date prediction in a 1 in 5 scenario. Failing is good if you build up to something really impressive. Build to a strong ending. Cheers. Tom |

Thanks for the input.
What I probably need is to put it aside for a while and reconsider it after some time with clear mind because what I feel (and this is something that your advices helped me feel more clearly) is that this is more of a challenge to the magician and not to the audience. aware |

I think your last post provides insight.
Having had this successfully performed for me by Joe Givan in Denver years ago, it hit me between the eyes. I watched for any tell-tale signs and saw none. After reading Dai Vernon's writing on this in the small yellow pamphlet he put out (I think the $20 manuscript?), I was even more enamored with the concept. I tend to think the more conviction you have, the more success, but still failure shows vulnerability, and in performance, I prefer planned vulnerability. Still, this is an effect I re-visit every so often because there is a lot to learn from it. |

Aware, check out Luke Jermay's " A Darker Dai" from "7 Deceptions" He has a variation of this effect that incorperates some very clever linguistic deceptions that make this effect nearly 100% Also, check out his dvd "Skullduggery" which has the same effect done with different objects.
