Hey all. I'm a newbie at card magic, and am looking to learn the sleights needed to perform. Will Ammar's Easy To Master Card Miracles show me a good range of sleights? I know they focus on teaching specific tricks, but would you say they were good to start with? Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights contain a massive range of sleights, but if I purchase volume 1 will I be confronted with a number of sleights, but not clue how to work them into a trick? I'll be getting RRTCM to help me too.
Thanks .

ETMCM will teach you the sleights necessary to perform the tricks taught on each tape.
RRTCM is a great book, study it well and have fun.

Hi,
Personally, if you are new to card magic, the best buy would be Ammar Easy To Master Card Miracles serie (Heck, even if you are not new!). First, Ammar is a very good teacher and you will appreciate the over the shoulder angle (which is what the magicican sees as he is performing) and the super-practice session on his tapes, and he also gives good tips on how to perform the tricks. Don't get me wrong, Daryl is also a very good teacher (fast, but good!), but his Encyclopedia of Card Sleights contains only that; Sleights! (no tricks) So you'll know a lot of sleights but will not be able to perform any tricks... As compared to the Ammar series which teaches you the sleights in order to perform many tricks (all top-notch classic effects, which endured the test of time and generations!!!) and after you'll be able to do other tricks (books, etc...) with the sleights that you learned on the Ammar tapes. Hope this helps you! If I may add my 2 cents, I strongly recommend you start with Ammar Easy To Master Card Miracle Volume 2 (you don't have to buy them in order). The reason is that you'll get a lot of good strong tricks; The Ambitious Card (a must), Twisting the Aces (a classic), Dc Daley's Last Trick & Poker Face (so good, yet so simple!!! and Dc Daley's trick happens in the hands of the spectator -- read: more powerful effect) and don't forget Card Warp (which is simply mind-boggling to the audience, but simple to do!!!) If you want to know what is on each tapes (Ammar and Daryl) check on http://www.llpub.com/ and they have a description for each If you need any advice or have any other questions just PM me! Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights does contain some effects, but not a lot.

I'll have to disagree with saturnin, Daryl does teach effects, too. But of course his main focus is on the sleights. I personally own all 8 volumes and I think it is important to learn the basics as well. Michael Ammar teaches practically no sleights, just tricks.
So it depends on what you are focussing. If you want to learn a few tricks, go with Michael Ammar; if you want to learn the sleights, IMHO there's nothing like daryls EOCS

Hey, TheRetainer, I suggest you start with Micheal Ammar's easy to master card miracles volume 2, then you go with Daryl's card encyclopedias. Daryl teaches MOSTLY sleights, while he teaches also a few tricks. But once you have mastered the sleights, you can create dozens of effects with these sleights, but with Ammar, you can only do the tricks on the tape. So basicly , start with Ammar, then learn the sleights by Daryl to come up with your own effects!
Good luck!

If you want to learn the slights , I recomend Brad Burts teaching videos they are in my opion the best for learning. Then after you learn the slights go out and by dayrls or any other magacian tapes and get the finner points to the effects

Hi newbie Card Buddy!
I'm a newbie too and I bought (to complicate your life even more) 1. Richard Kaufman's Basic Card Technique (Video) 2. Richard Kaufman's On the Pass (Video) 3. Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation Vol 1. In my youth I used to detest card tricks (too much like hard work, and I didn't know the secrets of many sleights). I really enjoy the challenge of learning a sleight now, and the above have given me a fair few things to get going with (keep a deck with you at all times - it'll always keep you amused), but I'll be seeing what Daryl et al have to offer also. My main advise (for what it's worth) would be to get DVD over video, simply because it's a lot easier to find the sleight you want to concentrate on. I bought McBride's DVD on Friday and was performing one of the productions to my long suffering wife on Saturday and she was VERY impressed with what I could do (and believe me, I'm no natural). Out of interest, what brand of cards do you have, and where did you get them from? |

Thanks Beetroot. What did you think of the Kaufman videos? I was going to get DVD's anyway; I agree completely with your point about the ease of navigation. Skipping between sections on a DVD is so much easier compared to a VHS, plus all the rewinding/ fast-fowarding doesn't wear out a DVD in the same way it does a video tape. As for what cards I use, I'm currently making do with some used casino cards (I have quite a selection), but I've got some poker Bicycle decks coming from MagicTricks.co.uk.

I thought the Kaufman videos were pretty good. The Basic Card Technique one was just enough to give me something to play with and the On the Pass one demonstrates just how long I'm going to have to practise for! The Pass video has a few tricks at the end which utilise the pass and are pretty good. I can't do them yet!
Interesting that you got your cards from MagicTricks.co.uk. That's where I'll be ordering mine from, and it's where I bought the about Videos and DVDs (I've also got the Black Envelope DVD which is well worth the money for a neat trick - see another thread for more details) |

Retainer,
Reading through the post I agree that both sets of tapes are excellent. My suggestion however would be to purchase the 4 volume set of Card College by Robert Giobbi. The books are excellent! They show the sleights and he gives you tricks to perform. The books are great for learning and for reference work. Hope this helps. Frank |

I think the Daryl videos though they are good are the last thing you need to buy. For me a slight gets good because you need to use it for an effect and practice it for use with the effect. With no effect, 150 slights are unneeded.
Think about the effects you actually perform for people other than your family/friends/dog. How many slights do you use with all of them put together. Not that many, I'll bet. Frank

It is all a matter of perspective. I think learning sleights is valuable, more so then buying a book full of tricks. I personally own the Daryls' EOCS. The knowledge I have gained from them has helped me develop my own tricks. Brand new effects that came out of my brain... not variations of someone else's stuff. There are obviously many types of magician. I like to create my own tricks, and having a library of sleights in my head allows me the freedom to do so. Others can be performers, or hobbyists, etc... I think that when taking advice or reading that of others, you should remember perspective. -Jason |
