Hi folks,
This post may be more suited to another area of the Café, however, I'm posting it here as it has to do with effects exclusively for children's entertainers. I have a number of effects and props that I have made for use in my shows. I'm considering marketing a couple of these, so my question is to those of you who have marketed items before. What is the best way to go about this? Do you just contact a dealer (like Hank Lee or Murphy's) and see if they're interested, or do you find it's best just to get the things made up and stick them on your own site, or....what? Any advice you can give would be GRATEFULLY received. Many thanks |

Billy:
I have done this but from a different angle. As a graphic designer and artist, I have developed a lot of different ideas for various effects and changes to older effects to bring them up to date. What worked for me was to team up with a magic manufacturer and we worked as a team to put out a couple of new products. In my case, working with P and A silks is a great way for me to be able to help him and him to help me. We now work as a team to develop new concepts in silk magic. I have the design knowledge and creativity he is after, while he has the connections and manufaturing skill I need to make the quality product. For both of us it is a win-win situation. Kyle

One of the easiest way is: Put it in your website, advertise in Magic Café (without posting your "ads" in the thread! Buy REAL advertisement) and you should get quite a bit of sales.
This is great to 'test the market'. If it is good, you can contact Murphy supplies and I think they will be glad to check out your new stuff. I remember one manufacturer website that asks for contributors to magic effects. Anyone knows? |

Billy,
I have just celebrated my 2nd year in magic manufacturing. I did not realize how LITTLE I knew about the whole process and I can assure you it is very deceptive regarding the profit margin/labor, parts & overhead ratio. It is extremely hard to survive if you do not fully access EVERY aspect of your business. Feel free to call me anytime in the evenings ( West Coast time ) and I will give you some pointers etc. I look forward to possibly seeing your creations someday...even if you would be the competion Chance Wolf Wolf's magic

Thanks for the advice guys I REALLY appreciate it.
Chance, I think I'll take you up on that offer and give you a ring to have a chat. I'm in Australia though, so I'll have to figure out the time thing. Thanks again |
