Interested in hearing peoples opening lines prior to their performance, especially to the chosen spectator.
I think the one from Carl Cloutier's "Bill in Kiwi" DVD is great (for adult audiences and a male spectator) "I am going to show you a trick that will remind you of your first intimate experience " .. Pause .. "It will be quick and tomorrow you will be telling everybody about it" (Carl Cloutier) |

I'd be rather careful using patter like Cloutier's opening statement. Though personally, I'm anything but offended by such a line, there might be spectators (or even entire audiences, depending on who you're performing for) who feel seriously offended if you start talking about "intimate experiences"... even if it's just meant as a joke. Just my two cents.
My opening lines are something along the lines of this little dialog: (just after I've appeared on stage, I turn to a spectator putting on a VERY sincere and strict voice and facial expression - sometimes I even point my wand at him) Me: "You Sir, stand! (pause) What's your name?" Him: "John Doe" -pause! I put on a face like I was lost in thoughts- Me: "That's correct." It usually gets a first laugh. |

I love Michael Finney's opening line, and I share it here because I think it only can work for him, based on where he's from and his character. Paraphrased,
"I'm from Phoenix, AZ, and I delight in telling you that's where I'm from, because after spending 26 years in Phoenix, the thought of going to Hell no longer frightens me at all." |

I like the idea of writing a little script about yourself then weave a few jokes in it.
I usually get right to the magic...and everything goes downhill from there! John |

Opening with a silent piece is nice to establish yourself and your footing for the show, but those opening lines are still crucial. They speak of your performance personna, your intelligence and your spirit.

Carls opening is rather questionable

To each his own though if you get good laughs go for it
