Originally from Al Koran. It's in one of his books I think and you can make the gaff yourself. It's a good effect if you like book tests- I don't- they are logically inconsistent insofar as there is no reason to select a word from a book-the spec could just think of a word - then what do you do? That said, the gaff could be used in another way other than for a book test- if you know this effect, you know what I mean.

Kamus,
You make a good case that a booktest cannot stand logically on its own, but has value as part of a routine. I use the following ruse: "Some people think that I am not so much reading your thoughts, but am subtely influencing you to think certain thoughts, or that I know what someone is likely to be thinking in certain situations given your age, sex and personality. To preclude all of this, I will have you randomly pick a word. That way it will be something that you are not even aware of until just hsi minute..." |

RLF, your ruse is a decent solution and there are others too. My avoidance of them is just personal to me- many much better performers than me use book tests to very good effect and I have done so myself but in the main I stay away from them these days as that question of why use a book lurks under the surface.

It's difficult at times in magic to make everything as logical as we would like. But we magicians are clever chaps. We can cook up an excuse (ruse) for just about any situation!

Do you know which Al Koran Book this was described in? I have a few of them, and hate to spend money on props that other people have ripped off!
