Last night I went to my daughters Band concert. My ears started to bleed as the slaughtered each song. I will pay for the arm rest I rigged to shreads while I listened. After the concert my daughter asked how it was, "Beautiful Honey just perfect." I am now lying to my kids...

Yes you are lying, what's your point?
Should you tell the truth or lie? Was it you daughters intention to slaughter the music? Is it just that you are now an old fart who doesn't understand the youth of today or their culture? ;)

She did not do it on purpose. It is jr. high class. They were playing stuff that we all know. The usual types of music. It was Scary. It is meant to be tounge and cheek.

If you have children you'll sit through horrible concerts, basket ball games where the winning score is 8, soccer games in the rain... It comes with the territory, and a smile, and a "you were wonderful". It is all worth it.

Let's imagine to substitue 'my daughters Magic show' for 'my daughters Band concert'. Maybe your criticism will take another style, not negative one. If you love Magic, you won't say your daughter is a bad magician.

Let's read and understand the original post.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Kids can tell when you lie to them. I am lucky I live in a town with great music programs so it's more like competing for best of the best.

Did you ever tell your daughter about Santa Clause? Get over it already! You told her what she wanted to hear, because you love her and did not want to offend her. Good job. Be proud!

If one really wants to be careful, though, when you hear, "Daddy, did I do good?", you can say, "Sweetheart, I love to watch you - I could watch you all day long!" Followed by a big hug, of course!

Part of this is the fact that there are very few kids of junior high age who are world class magcians. They have to start somewhere. If she is dedicated and has any aptitude for music, she will improve. You can't expect her to be professional calibre now, but you can still tell her that she did a good job without lying to her, if she is doing a good job for her age level and experience level. This encouragement will prompt her to keep progressing until the day comes when you will beg her not to stop instead of hoping you won't have to sit through it!

Perspective, please? I am probably not going to be liked for this, but here goes: I have near-perfect relative pitch (meaning that I can hear when someone is off key, but can't tell you whether they on a middle C of a D, which is perfect pitch) and, yes, a high school or grade school concert can be very uncomfortible (about like driving a red-hot railroad spike into my skull), but there are lots of things that are worse.
Remember the Masked Magician? Or Gigli? Or that song in "Attack of the Killer Tomatos?" So, while I understand that it may have been a little discomforting, try for a little perspective, okay? Lee Darrow, C.H.

I spent (or mis-spent) part of my younger days as a booking agent and personal manager. Ever prayed for deafness?
The trick I learned was to never discourage. But I certainly referred acts to other agencies, managers, and record labels! (For better fit, of course!) And then there are those two beautiful, talented, kids of mine… Need pictures and a demo? LOL! Bob Magic By Sander |
