Hi!
Until this Sunday I was unfamiliar with Steve "Banachek" Shaw's work. Now I'm suitably impressed! Would any of you Banachek afficianado know if this particular force is in one of his lecture notes? The performer produces four identical business cards (these could be ESP cards or photographs, too) and lays them down. The spectator chooses a single card by touching it. The performer says that the spectator chose that card, though he could have chosen "this card, or this card, or this". As he does that he picks up the three unchosen cards to show that they say "This Card" on the back. The chosen card is turned to show that it says "That Card." I was wondering if this is explained in one of Banachek's recent lecture notes, like "Pre Thoughts." I know it is in "SYZYGY--The First Five Volumes" Edited by Lee Earle. However, at $170 this is a bit steepish. Thanks for any help or insight you guys can provide. Manoj

You can find it on the first volume of Banachek's Psi Series DVDs. The effect is called This 'n That, I believe.

Paul and Photofnish,
Thanks for the prompt reply. "This 'n That" seems like the right one. Is it in one of his lecture notes, too? Manoj

It is in his 2005 lecture notes. I picked a set up in Portland when I attended his lecture in February.

How does one go about purchasing his lecture notes? I notice that his website http://www.banachek.org/banachekmain..htm doesn't offer it. Incidentally, it has a "For Sale" button which take you to a website that sells Banachek t-shirts!
Seriously, though, where can I purchase his lecture notes? Thanks. Manoj

If you PM Scott Wells, he can probably give you more detail. Last I heard, he and Banachek had decided to not sell these lecture notes except at actual lectures.

Thank you, Chet, you are correct. But because of your posting and other prompting, we have decided to offer Banachek's 2005 Lecture Notes for sale. We will update our website soon, but in the meantime you can order an autographed set directly from us which will include one of his new promotional postcards.
So what is in the Lecture Notes? Well, some of the material is a sampling from the Psi Series DVD set and includes: Word of the Ring (DVD #2) This and That (DVD #1) Stigmata (DVD #2) But there are some things that go into a bit more of an explanation like Pre-Show Patter, pictures and details on how to make up your own Q&A Pad and the Cheshire Cat Principle which is a lethal subtlety on a design duplication. Moreover there is an effect called The Brain Game and The Brain Game Two which looks like the kind of material that belongs in Psychological Subtleties. In fact, they may appear in Psychological Subtleties II or III. Perhaps the most sought after effect is Banachek's routine for correctly devining a telephone number among thousands in the phone book. In effect, a sealed prediction envelope is handed to a spectator. One volunteer selects a page from a local phone book, another selects a column on that page and still another selects a phone number from that page. One number from tens of thousands yet the performer's prediction is correct. All clearly illustrated with 35 photographs. Sorry for the lengthy dissertation, but if anyone is interested in buying a copy, then you have the right to know what's in it. Banachek will be performing and lecturing at a convention in Spain later this month after a number of lectures in France. He will also be lecturing in the U.S. at the MindVention in Las Vegas http://www.mindvention.com/ later this year (that site will surely be updated soon). Again, the Lecture Notes are not yet available on our website, but you can order by sending $22.50 for U.S. orders and $25.00 for foreign orders via PayPal to swells4691@aol.com Now back to your regularly scheduled thread. And thanks for reading. yours, Scott Wells, Managing Partner Magic Inspirations http://www.magicinspirations.net

I picked up the lecture notes from one of the book distributors (H & L?) on a whim, simply because I didn't want to pay 4 dollars in shipping for Phil's 5 dollar Verbal Control which was really the only reason I was ordering at all. Then in trying to find something to make the shipping charges more palatable, I noticed they were selling Banachek's 2005 lecture notes.
At first I was a bit disappointed when I saw how much of the content was on the DVDs and available from other sources. Then I actually read the notes and began a big smile. Banachek includes touches in the notes, ranging from cleaner handlings to ideas about getting a laugh out of a situation. The lecture notes version of This & That provides both. I was amused by the effect on the DVDs but never thought to try it out. After reading it, I changed my mind and am very glad that I did. It is simple to carry around or create quickly impromptu and the effect is way out of proportion to the effort. It is a perfect close up or small venue opener. |

Guys, I'm sold! Scott I'm glad you and Banachek have decided to sell the notes to those of us who can't attend the lectures. Incidentally, Banachek's website has his tour dates, but these cut-off in April 2005. You may want to have them updated.
I'll be buying my copy of the notes...or the DVD, I still can't decide. Manoj

Gee, Scott -- between you guys and the Sisti/Osterlind team-up, I'm never gonna save a nickel. I can just see me in 15 years. "Shouldn't you be retired, Mr Cox?" "Can't afford it. But, man, just look at that steel pipe bend!"
Somehow, you must have known that I have another check coming in a few days (finished a lecture in Kentucky) and will have an extra $22.50. You'll be getting Paypal'd soon. *jeep! --Chet (broke and loving it!)

Thanks guys for the nice words.
one reason I do not update the website is the fact that my college agent does not start booking my fall till now. However I have now made the few changes that need to be. The other was when I get back from Europe, I plan on revamping my entire personal website, so check back then. On the lecture notes, please keep in mind these are lecture notes, not a book. As a result they will include items from books, dvds and the like of past and future, that is usually the nature of lecture notes. However as said, they do include a lot of touches not seen elsewhere even on old items. Well I am off to Vegas to visit Jenny McCarthy tomorrow, should be fun.
