I have just made a trick and want it to look like a basket weave. I have called fabric stores, wallpaper stores, and other looking for something that looks like basket weave but I can't find any. I have also tried painting it but have had a hard time covering it all to look realistic. any ideas??

You might try a furniture repair shop that specializes in recaning chairs.
There are various weaves of cane, some of them look like a basket weave, that come in sheets. Check with your caner, he/she should be able to tell you how to handle the material (you usually have to soak it in water to make it pliable.) and/or the use of synthetic vs. natural materials. Make sure you bring in your prop so they know what you are trying to accomplish. Check out http://www.vandykes.com for potential cane material. Let me know how it comes out.

You also might want to try checking at Pier One Imports or a Bombay store. They sometimes have table runners or place mats that are basket weave. You didn't say how large the prop you are building is, so this may be an expensive answer to your quandry, but I thought that I would throw out the suggestion anyway.
