Now my grandchildren are 4 and 2 I am seriously considering getting myself a children's magic act together.
Something to build on. So, that I can start by entertaining them with a couple of items at bedtime...and more extensively on their birthdays to come. Come on guys...what are YOUR recommendations! I quite fancy Rocky Racoon and D'Lite's...and I certainly remember my daughter's face when I had a magician at her 7th birthday. When he performed the nested wands routine...the kids loved it!...what a riot! regards, Wulfie |

Thumb Tips can be used for hundreds of different effects. Sponge Balls are also a good starter. Basic coin moves go well See Tarbell books or Bobo.
For easy to do effects for just plan fun magic, then go to a local magic store. Basic Skill routines are a little more intense with props and comedy. The "Encylopedia of Impromptu Magic" is also a good book using natural items, newspaper, salt shakers, table items, etc.

My youngest grandkids are 6 and 4.
You mentioned "at bedtime" so here's a few close up tricks. Sponge balls or rabbits. Gadabout Coins ending with a piece of candy or something. Copper/Silver coin transpositions in their hands. "Gem Busters". "Cubio". Paddle tricks. Jay Scott Berry's 'Eclipse" silk effects. IT effects. Elastic band tricks. Thimbles. A lot of those inexpensive tricks like Ball & Vase, Steel Ball & Tube are good for the young ones. Two year olds may only be amused by a couple of these. Enjoy. |

Of course The Magic Colouring Book! And maybe you can even make one with your grandchildren's pictures inside. Also, the Magic Pom Poms.

From a good, basic book of tricks, learn a 'torn-and-restored' or 'cut-and-restored' effect (napkin, rope, etc.)

My 4 yr old twins love having me do an egg bag routine (egg from anywhere), or a rope routine (including professors nightmare) or even a sponge ball routine where they catch me 'red handed' (see red handed by gosh) I often do these instead of a bed-time story after sufficient pleading - wich has kind-of the opposite effect of the nice...calming....fairytale...

Get the Mark Wilson video course in magic. There a are magic tricks there that are ideal for kid's parties or just performing for them before bedtime.

I had a wonderful visit with a magician yesterday.
He reminded me of something shared by Jeff McBride... The solution to your show is not in the Dealers room, it is within you. With that said, I love my spring and other puppets. I also use sound activated silly props, strange glasses, song parodies, music and a bit of magic. During the 2003 I.B.M. convention, I invited a clown/magician to one of my library shows. I asked her what she thought about it. She replied, "it was good, but there was not much magic in it. Actually since then I have put more heavy hitting(and fun magic bits) to my Nearly Normal Programs. My wife is instrumental in my putting in silly sleight of hand stuff. Of course the Nearly Normal Routine with The Colonel, the sound activated chicken that does the chicken dance, gets more reaction than my muscle pass with a quarter. Finding a theme may help you choose your props. What gets wonderful response for others may or may not work with you. Happy Journeys. Harris "Still Learning" Deutsch Laughologist
