I would make zombie. It is a very big ability of moves. IMO, do this better.

At first, I thought, Zombie, but after seeing you want to also vanish the puppet, I would recommend the mini asrah. While everyone is watching the little fella float, the dirty work's already been done.
Good luck with whatever you choose, Rob |

Years ago Grant had a book out called six modern levitations that may give you some ideas as far as some methods. It really does not give any plans just ideas but maybe the self-contained form idea would work for this application. I think he called it the parlor asrah???
I kinda like the puppet idea,...an assistant that doesn't complain mmmmm...

You don't need a fancy asrah couch if the puppet body is made of foam ruber and you can squeeze the whole thing into your hand, for instance. Treat it more like a Zombie or floating ball levitation where you are used to thinking about the floater as a "thing."

Spellbinder,
Are you suggesting Topiting it? Tod

Hmmm... interesting idea...
I just went back and re-read your original question and got this picture of a hand puppet on your hand. Somehow the puppet floats up off your hand and begins to move around behind a cloth like at a puppet booth. Then it dips and vanishes only to reappear. Then it's wrapped in the cloth briefly (maybe a la Asrah) and vanishes again. A combination of Zombie and a switch for a duplicate that can be crushed and Topited... I think this could be a blast if you gave the puppet a good strong personality. Good luck!
That's our departed buddy Burt, aka The Great Burtini, doing his famous Cups and Mice routine

I came up with a method a number of years ago to achieve this very effect using a "Rocky The Racoon." Quite a good effect, easy to build and perform. The puppet vanishes at the end of the routine flawlessly!

May be you can use some kind of black art, instead of topiting

Wonder if it could be done with a vent figure?
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

Tgunther- you may want to PM Harbin Jr. on the Café. I just built him an illusion from which he levitates a ragdoll. Basically the doll is placed on a table. A box with a cut-out pattern is placed over the doll. The box-top is covered with a foulard and the doll levitates out of the box. The box can clearly be seen empty as it is pulled off stage. Then you just go into a regular asrah routine...
Give him a PM and if he doesn't care, I will send you more specific plans... Bryan |

Place an Estes model rocket engine size D in bottom and light it off.
Stuff puppet with flash paper so the parachute charge at the end will light it and it will disappear in a ball of flame...Should be done outside. :goof: Just kidding, please don't do this at home!
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Tony Andruzzi on the Bizarre Video discusses such a thing, only for use with a person not a puppet, though it is in effect a mini - vertical- asrah. I do not see why it could not be done for a much shorter being.

Maybe you could make the Zombie gimmick make only the head float and still work the mouth, so when you cover the doll with a scarf the head floats and it is still talking, and it could peek over the scarf. Then you can use a zombie technique to vanish it. You can hide the fact that it is only the head if you can make the body drop out of sight when the head starts to raise, as in the vanishing bird cage.

A VERY SIMPLE way of accomplishing this, I suppose, would be to just use the old seance trick/gag of a large cloth or foulard and a fake hand. After the usual bell ringing and objects being thrown this way and that, the head of the doll or vent figure pops up into view. If using a pro vent figure, you could even make the head rotate 360 degrees! A simple solution...and it might be very effective.

Karrell Fox had a method of doing asrah with a rabbit: He made a form out of pipe cleaners..the thing is floated ala zombie, and then crushed along with the foulard. Ditch the puppet into a mirror base.

The late Col. Bill Boley has plans in a Magic with Ventriloquism booklet. He shows how to make a very inexpensive Super-X suspension for floating a dummy.

At first I thought it may be a sign from above or beyond - an angel or a ghost, but when I looked more closely, it was actually Knucklehead Smith! Thanks for clearing up this mystery in my life. In all seriousness, a third hand application could be pretty funny. You hold a curtain in front of the puppet and it comes to life. Thanks, Richard (Prof. Pabodie - I just noticed you already mentioned this idea. I like the rotating head idea. Very funny!) |
