Hey Tom:
Great pic's... Who do you get to shoot the pic's for you. I've handed my camera to some people in the crowd and it sure is fun to see what they get, but your shots seem to have someone behind the camera that has a good eye. Just curious... |

Yo Bro!! Just a guy I met, with a very nice camera and a very good eye. He said he had to re-shoot a bunch so that my face was in the middle of the ring and the coin was half way up between the hands and so forth.
Every time I think of you Brother Paul, I fondly remember the Great Bar Busking Challenge of 1987 between you, me, Shawn & Kenton in Phoenix. Those were the days. . . . but so are these!! |

Tom,
I was watching my new 'Street Theater' DVD and noticed one of the "Silly People" in the show looked like he resembled you. On the DVD his name is listed as Collin Franks. Any Relation? I got a copy of your ring DVD and it is great..... Do you perform this routine on the STREET? I am not sure I could pull it off but I really enjoy watching your performance. kOnO

KOnO,
No relation to Collin. As for the ring routine, I have closed my show with it for over 25 years. I still love doing it and the audiences still love seeing it. I encourage you to learn it and perform it. You CAN do it, if you put your mind to it. Thanks for the kind words. Tom http://www.ballvase.com/tfrank/weblog/tfblog.htm |

Tom, just curious: I know you do both the cups and rings in your routine, why did you decide to close with the rings as opposed to the cups, as most buskers seem to do? Thanks, Jim

Jim,
I come from the Cellini school of street performing. My friend and mentor taught me the value of banging on the cups and making noise with them to attract the crowd. This has always worked well for me. Ever once in a while, I switch things up. . . but. . . if it ain't broke. . . don't fix it. TF |

The cups is both a great close and a great opener. Tom Frank is in good company opening with it. Percy Press and Johnny Fox are two othe buskers that open with the cups.
I have been messing about with it as an opener myself. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I’m so sick of posts being deleted without any reason given, and by unknown people at that." - Steve Brooks Sep 7, 2001 8:38pm ©1999-2014 Daniel Denney all rights reserved. |

I'm guessing you're referring to pikes place market in Seatle Wa.? If so I am at this time kicking myself for not being able to see the show. It would be well worth the 2.5 Hour drive!
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Tom:
Was that in '87? Wow. That was a long time ago. It was a good night. That was when you got stuck in the desert and you and Shawn wrote lecture notes in 16 hours and popped a quick lecture at Gene Urban's house. I still remember the back page of some of the notes about the **** of Choice... I still understand that concept. A good memory. We should connect more often, but we still cross paths in other ways. Take care Tom and let me be one of the people that thank you for you contribution to the Art of Magic. From one busker to another, "Keep it up!" It's a great thing that we do. Stopping a crowd and giving them a ride for a buck. What a gas. I just finished a festival here in Fair Oaks, CA and I am basking in the afterglow of 3 stage shows and 5 street shows today. It just feels good. I think that's why I keep doing this for this for the past 31 years. Just good to count down and drift off thinking of the day... It just feels good. Ran into Frank Starsinic today at the festival I was working. Really good to meet him and put a face and personality with the face and posts. Good kids too. (Frank keep an eye on Mary!) So once again, thanks Tom for the pic's and keeping the art alive... |

Hey Tom , cool pics! Wish I was there with you, Pike Place Market was the first place I performed street magic...only made a few bucks here and there. I wasn't very good at the time...hell, I was only 16 yrs old and in my second year of magic. Me and a buddy worked together , juggling and magic.
There was this one street magician, the guy had ta be in his late 20's or early 30's. He wore a beat up fedora and a blue blazer, tee shirt and jeans, also he had dark hair and a mustache. He did the most amazing card tricks I'd ever seen at the time. He performed an ambitious card trick which I thought I had pegged as being a Svengali deck. After the routine he started throwing the cards down the street... over a block away! Of course later in the day I walked down the block and picked up as many of the cards as possible and kept them. This all happened around 1986. The folks at the Pike Place Magic shop knew the guy, but for the life of me I can't remember his name having only met him once. Have fun in Seattle Tom. johnny
