Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let those who were interested know that it will not be long before ProCraft Illusions will be manufacturing and selling my Tilted Crystal Illusion. We are currently finishing up a few last details such as price and exact materials. If time proves to be our friend, it should be ready for order hopefully within a month. The prop itself is going to be crafted by Bill Blagg of ProCraft Illusions. Bill does wonderful work and is working very hard to make this one of the finest Glass Box type illusions on the market today. For more information on Tilted Crystal and to see an artists rendering you can visit my website: Thanks everyone, Chris Stolz Stolz Illusions

Hey Chris-
I looked at your website, and liked seeing the pictures of your illusions. Although they were animated, I still thought they looked great and looked creative. I had a question for you though. I too design illusions (like you) but I don't don't have a builder. How do you go about sending your ideas to illusion companies for construction. Do you have any suggestions? (please email me with your answer). Thanks- Derek |

To be perfectly honest, I didn't expect it. I simply put some things online and was immediately contacted by several builders. As far as seeking out a builder, do some searches online and you will find TONS out there. Find someone who not only builds well, but is HONEST. I held back until I was absolutely positive that I had an honest individual who shared a similar vision as I did.
Try checking out the Workshop section of the Café and take note of who seems to know their stuff. There are some very talented craftsmen (and women), on there. Designing illusions isn't easy work. There is so much out there that it's very hard to not duplicate. Many of the effects on my website are simply versions of existing effects while others may have a new idea or totally new concept. Honestly speaking, I keep my really hot "Gems" to myself until approached by a client who is looking for something new. Hit up all of the furniture stores and see what's "IN" these days. Find out what kind of looks people are into. You'll find many interesting shaped glass cabinets and tables that will make you do a double take. Also make sure you do not advertise anything that doesn't actually work. Also, thank you for the compliments on my work. I've got some new pieces in the works that I think are really going to push some limits. Thanks again, Chris Stolz

Chris, allow me to say congratulations. It is always great to see creative new ideas enter the market. I am sure that the "Tilted Crystal" will not only prove to be a successful design for you, but for all those who will own and perform it.

Excuse me if this sounds rude. but what is the difference between this and a crystal casket? the fact that it's kinds tilted a little bit? I dunno I seem to think that this is just another Crystal Casket. It couldn't have taken a signifigant amount of time to come up with this "Origional" piece. and I just want to know the difference between this and a crystal casket. a tilted structure does not make a new origional illusion.

Hi Ferrell,
No worries, that is a completely legitimate question....one that I have been asked before. The begin, I just have to say that I love the tilted look and since no one else was doing it, I wanted to do it. What came out was something that had that extra little visual appeal. It wasn't a square box trick...it was a crooked box trick. (In fact "Crooked" was the original name until I changed it to Tilted Crystal) The actual building of the prop is going to be very elegant and very sturdy. It will be hand crafted from beautiful Cherry and stained appropriately in a light Cherry stain. It isn't just an illusion, but a fine piece of what could almost be described as "Elegant Furniture". You will find that many of my pieces to come will use this same wood look. I'm aiming for more of a classic oak furniture look than a shiney, metalic one. (For those who do use melatic props, great! I hope they work well for you and suit your show and your personality. For those who have a more classic looking show, I hope that this is something you may interesting.) My version, although it is not the first to do so, does not use a bevel base. To be perfectly honest, I'm not a big fan of the bevel base. There are a few exceptions to this, but in most cases, I don't find them particularily deceptive or well designed. I have designed a base which is not only deceptive but looks a little more natural. The table top portion is flat thus making it look much more like what I think it should be....just a table. As we all know, I didn't invent the glass box idea. It's been around for years. I just wanted to put out a new version of the effect that featured something a little different. There are more versions of this trick than we can count, but so far, most of them have one thing in common. They are built square. Thanks for the question, and I am open to any more questions that yourself, or anyone else may have. Also, thanks NFox! That's always nice to hear. It feeds my fire and keeps me working as hard as I can to come up with workable material. Chris Stolz

Chris-
I may not have mentioned this, but I too came up with a similar idea for a tilted crystal casket illusion. (I will say that is no where near the same quality as yours though. Right now I am writing a book about a new deceptive base I came up with over a year ago. With this deceptive base there are a lot of possibilities one could use with it. Most of which are traditional illusions which have been improved with this base. One of the ideas that I came up with was a tilted version of the crystal casket. Yet since one of the reasons I was creating this book, was to make a book of inexpensive stage illusions to perform (the base itself only costs about 30 dollars to build depending on the quality of the wood). Anyway, the reason I came up with the tilted version of the casket is because I built a crystal casket illusion out of cardboard (which is what most of the illusions are made of), and I noticed that it really wasnt that sturdy, and it didn't look that attractive either. So, going back to the drawing board, and my Algebra II book, I redesigned the box so it had the same shape as Chris's illusion. When I built the new design, I found that the box was 5 times stronger then the first square design. Basically all I am saying is that Chris was right when saying that a diamond shaped box is much stronger... Derek Merdinyan |
