Let me describe the situation first.
The show starts, the magician is not seen. Somewhere, a violin starts playing. Two assistants walk onstage, and hold up a large sheet. They let it down, and the magician is standing there, playing. The sheet idea is very loose, I just need a good way for the magician to appear to start the show. Because he is playing, he must be able to stand and have a little elbow room the entire time. Any ideas? I have a couple, but I'm no pro at stage magic so I thought... if any of the experts had any advice... I saw Andrew Mayne's Specter Cabinet, but can you be standing the whole time? - Thanks. |

I am not quite sure what you are trying to accomplish besides appearing on stage behind a curtain. In Andrew Mayne's book, The Secret Illusion Show, there is an illusion just like this.

You could accomplish this with black art.

What about some sort of standing shadowbox effect. Your shadow could fade on during a chosen part in the music. If you're going for an elegant opening with the violin this plays better than an instant appearance.
You don't need to build an actual cabinet. You you could build some sort of spandex wall ( shaped as a prop that fits your theme...maybe a big violin ) and then fade on behind it after its been shown that nothing was behind it to start. Best, Tim |

If you have The Secret Illusion Show, you'll know why it won't work for this effect.
I'll probably end up using some simple black art. It's going to be a pain on the stage I'm using, but I guess I'll have to live with it. Thanks for the ideas, guys. |

Check out Tarbell. There is an illusion called Three Kings and a Queen that would work well for you. It is very inexpensive and can be easily themed to any situation. Also, the door production in the Mark Wilson book would work very well for you.
Thanks, Richard |
