Well, I am glad the photos posted ok. They are not too clear, but hope it gives some ideas of how I had my set up and such for the day. I basically used my lefler Roll-on table and had an iPod Boom Box for my music. You cee the boom box in the top photo siitng on my table. It worked great as I learned that sound was a huge factor and a way for me to generate curiosity and turn that into larger crowds for the start of all my performances last weekend.
I am currently trying to learn to consolidate more so I am not bringing as much or at least so I can keep things lighter. I placed the table on a luggage style cart at the advice of some of you, and that worked absolutely perfect. So thank you all for thet great idea. One question I hade was whether or n ot what presntations and techniques I used here will work in other places I do this street magic at? I wonder if I have to learn to adapt more to different situations I find myself in. I knew that my wife and I really found our niche last weekend working main street. I just wonder if what worked there, may not work other places. I am certainly going to keep going out there and finding out for myself. Kyle

Sorry they are so tiny, but that is the only size I could get them at while still having the Café being able to post it due to the size limitations. Someone told me in a PM a possible better way of doing it. So, if they write back to me, I will see if I can post it a different way for people to view. At least it gives a general idea if nothing else.

"Something else that I learned was being friendly to every one, the other performers, the homeless guys, etc. Even though I got "This is my spot” by the end of the day I had other performers pimping for me (and I for them). I had homeless guys hawking for me and even dropping the biggest tip at times. You never know who can help you out in a pinch." Really you had homeless guys helping you out? That's pretty cool. I had a little bit of a problem with this the last time I was out. I was working my pitch and a drunken homeless guy moved in and started to panhandle a few stores down from me. Which was fine until he saw me starting a show and wanted to watch. Now I know you are supposed too move them to the back of your edge and forced them descretely to the outside, but I had just started to build my crowd. I only had three people in my edge, plus our homeless friend. I did not want to be rude to the guy, and I didn't want to set him off. But his presence made my fish run because they felt uncomfortable. In these situations should I cut my losses, move and try again, or do I build the homeless guy into the show? I found that trying to ignore his presence took away from my show because he was a talkative character. I was talking to a fellow magician who suggested carrying disinfectant spray, and give the guy a quick spray, and introduce "Our fresh new guest". I was worried this might upset our inhebriated spectator. What would you guys suggest doing?

Try saying... "Dad! I'm so glad you're here for the show, and you dressed up too! Just kidding guys, Dad never stays for the whole show, here's a buck Dad, we'll see ya later." Then proceed with the show and completely ignore him if he stays. If he does hang around, don't go overboard trying to poke fun at him, he could be way off his rocker and try to do something to mess up your show. After the show, just talk to him and BE NICE! Everyone of these "homeless" people have feelings, and most of them are harmless, but they are from the streets and can resort to drastics if backed into a corner, so just be cool with them and they'll respond pretty well. My experience has been that they just want a few bucks and sometimes someone to talk too. Give them a buck, talk to them, and send them on their way. don't spray them with anything, just treat them the way you want to be treated.

You can! The only thing that is stopping you is YOU. People are not out there hoping that you are going to fail. They want to have fun. Go out there and take the action upon yourself to just simply do it. Will it be hard? Sure it might be the first few times? Will you fail? Perhaps you might. BUT, you will learn so much more by the art of doing then you will sitting in your chair and wondering about it. Why not go out there and give it a shot. Find out for yourself. The learning experience alone is so well worth the effort you put forth in it. Kyle

Bah: Thanks so much for the kind words. I do appreciate that. If you are ever in the Philly area, let me know. I would be happy to meet up with you or have you at one of my performances. It would be a blast sharing ideas and the like.
I often hear of folks who just want to do things and want success but just are not eager enough to take that first step and take action to make it happen for them. Direct action is what it takes to make and acheive anything. It is tought sometimes to start, but once you do, then it is just another step towards success. Kyle

You are most welcome. The hardest part to gaining success is taking that first stepo and telling yourself that you have to take action to reach the success you want for yourself. Every time out should be a learning experience, so go out there and just do it. Learn and succeed.

I find once I hit the Boom Box & begin a few card & silk effects, Diminishing cards etc. Within 2-3 mins a crowd of 50-100 people have gathered & by the end of 15 mins this is larger again. I perform mainly in theatres & clubs but an act on the street is a real challenge & music works for me to attract a crowd. Silk to egg, Jumbo Invisible deck with lots of interaction, 6 card repeat, Linking Rings to music & Paper to $5 Bill switch as a pitch always gets a laugh! Simple fun entertainment is the key-I wish I could do this more, at least I now have an easy act to set up etc. Cheers |
