So I was thinking last night...
When my car needs gas, I pay at the pump with my debit card. I can order a pizza to be delivered to my house from Domino's and have it charged to my debit card over the phone. I can even include the tip for the driver. Even McDonalds takes credit cards now! I rarely carry cash anymore. I really don't need to, I use my charge card for everything. More and more people are carrying less and less cash on them. With credit cards and debit cards becoming the preferred method of payment I was thinking about how this may affect the busker. Imagine doing a set at 1pm on the Fourth of July in Time Square, NY and when it comes time to pass the hat no one has any cash on them to fill it with! "Umm....do you take debit card?" Do you guys think this will become a larger issue in the future? Will buskers eventually have to find work elsewhere? These are the things I waste my time thinking about...

Interesting viewpoint. Since around 80% of what I do is business related, I use cards extensively to track expenses. But, even then, I always have some cash on me. Still...is it possible that one day we might be forced to exchange our hats for a Nextel card swipe phone? Personally, I don't see it happening until using a card becomes as easy and reliable as cash...but then, they also said that Disco was the music of the 21st century.

Three letters A. T. M. just make sure you can see one from your pitch.

Busking has been on the brink of extinction since the first cop told the first acetabularius to "move along or suffer the consequences." We adapt.

Acetabularius? Holy Houdini! I hate it when I have to pull out the dictionary to keep up in here!

Interesting historical term:
"the game of "cups and balls," or, as the ancient Romans refered to it, "acetabularius," i.e. "he who deals with vinegar cups." |

It has happened to me many times that folks return later with their tip; the reason they give most often is that they had to change a large bill into something smaller, or convert currency at a nearby change booth. I have even been tipped by folks who had seen my show, and happened to recognize me walking down the street of a different country! That was pretty cool.

I gave her four fives and she handed one back to me and said, "I just saw your show but didn't have any money so I went to the ATM." I thought that was just about the coolest thing ever and thanked her profusely. On the flip side yesterday I had a school group in my first show a high school band from somewhere. They were the entire left side of my audience three deep. There had to be at least 40 of them. Anyway, as I am doing my hat line there is this one kid in the dead center staring daggers at me and shaking his head a big "no way buddy". School kids are notoriously hit or miss. They are either great or absolutely miserable. Well, I finish my hat line and this entire group makes a big show of leaving my show by exiting right through the right side of my crowd. They completely killed the hat and I made a total of $11 for that show. It should have been closer to $50. For about 30 seconds I was seething but I didn't show it. I thanked the people that did come forward profusely as they literally had to battle these kids to get past them to the hat. I reset my stuff, had a cold drink, and cranked out another show. The rest of the day went great and at the end of the day it didn't hurt my final number but I really do not understand why some kids go so far out of their way to be complete tools. I am sure if I was a more seasoned circle show performer I could have done something to circumvent it but yesterday I just took it on the chin and pressed on. I think next time I am going to make sure the school groups go in the back and if they show up first to the pitch I will pass it and start again a few minutes later. Because that is the other thing, These kids begged me to do a show for them and most of the group reacted well during the entire show. I think somebody in the group convinced them that I might think what they did was "funny". Anyway, that's my story. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board!
