For those who own this rather devilish wallet I offer you a routine.
A deck of cards is placed on the table in its case. "You might know that todays cards are a knock off of a much older deck, the Tarot." "Many changes have been made over the years." "The suits have changed, the amount of cards has changed." "But one thing remains constant it's, Magick! A spectator is told to select a card, they look at, commit to memory, sign it & return it. The Deck is then mixed. The mage now concentrates on the deck, says a few words in a forgotten tongue. "Look now as the magick has already happened!" With this the mage spreads the cards and one card is now face up, the Joker. The Mage asks the spectator to answer one question yes or no. "Is that your card?" "No." I sometimes forget that the jokers image is that of The Fool, a very powerful card from the Tarot." "In fact it is the only card from the Major Arcana that made it to todays deck." "Perhaps I should put it away as not to add anymore confusion!" The mage takes out his wallet and places the joker inside, the wallet tossed to the table the mage continues. Almost fumbling through the effect he makes a few attempts at finding the card to no avail. "Maybe I'm not the one to find it!" "I have an idea!" "Remember those magic 8 balls we had as a kid?" The mage picks up the wallet and removes the joker. He places it face up on the spectator out reached hand. "Cover this hand with the other and concentrate on your card. Shake it three times!" Spectator shakes his/her hands up and down. "Now take a look at the card." Spectator sees nothing has changed. "Remember when you are done asking the questions you turn over the 8 ball, turn over the card!" Spectator sees a written message on the back of the card, Look in wallet! The mage looks inside the wallet and removes the spectators signed card.

Um... just two historical facts you may wish to consider...
First of all, the Tarot deck did not come first... Actually, what we consider the 'modern' deck of playing cards pretty much appeared on the scene in Italy around 1377 or so. The Tarot deck doesn't appear until around 1450. And the Joker isn't derived from The Fool either. It's an independent invention, that if I remember correctly, was created for the game of Euchre (of all things). But why let facts get in the way of a good card trick? ;-)

I read the Max Maven post (when he was Guest of Honour), and he mentioned that it was probably impossible to say which deck of cards came into origin first. Not that it matters for our presentations - I would just be interested. Liam. |

The effect above is a rather tongue and cheek version of card to wallet.
I almost thought I didn't need to say that. Magickman

You may have better luck trying to find his book that he co-authored with Ronald Decker and Thierry Depaulis entitled "A Wicked Pack of Cards: The Origins of the Occult Tarot" (also out-of-print but Amazon has used copies going for $46). I haven't had a chance to check out Decker's and Dummett's more recent work, "A History of the Occult Tarot: 1870-1970" but I imagine it covers similar ground as the two previous books.

Forget the details...this is a great variation to a magicians effect...I would love to see this done...
half the sh*t that a magi says is rubbish, but plays an important role in the flow and overall meaning of a given effect...great job Magickman Baba |
