The legitimacy of NLP has been discussed quite a bit on this forum. What do you guys think of the legitimacy of Speed Reading, Photo Reading, Body language, Graphology and other similar 'skills'?

Speed reading
============= There are a number of speed reading 'courses' available. I used to do a bit 10-12 years ago. Success rates were variable in my trials. I guess it's something you can get better at but there are severe limits. If a mentalist claims he is doing speed reading - chances are it's a 'cover story'. Photoreading ============ Ummm I doubt this is something you can actually train yourself to do. There are a couple of validated cases of people with photographic memories (literally) but these are VERY rare and those that possessed them found it more of a curse than anything else. Again if a mentalist claims to be using photo-reading it is a 'cover story'. Body language. ============== This is used both as a useful way of obtaining information *and* as a cover story. Hellstromism quite literally is body reading and some people are exceptionally good at it. I am not one of those people, but I 'pretend to use it'. I do a routine with the mind power deck which uses body language to try and eliminate a little bit of the 'method' (if anyone is interested in my approach PM and I'll let you know - please only those who have purchased the deck). Graphology ========== Yes. Well kind of, as far as people's writing is concerned Psychological Subtleties (Banachek) has a great suggestion that involves writing which I often demonstrate to cries of 'no way'. Sometimes when performing in front of a small number of people I get the reation 'does everyone put it next to that number?' (hehe) a repeat with something else dispells that view. Graphology as a means of getting the character of someone. Well any divination system if it goes in depth enough can be used successfully as a method of cold reading. You will often hear members of the forum here suggesting you learn to read tarot cards, or palms, or whatever. It might sound a little ludicrous - but it's not. It really doesn't matter what you use as your system - it's good advice to those starting out cold reading. Regards Kris Sheglova
The above is all rubbish, except that which you chose to believe

Speed reading and photo reading work to certain extent but as far as I can see have no real use in mentalism. You can attend photoreading programs that teach you the technique. I found playing around with self trance and suggestion followed by quick glimpses of each of the pages worked for me. By then reading the book normally I found that I was absorbing and understanding the material quicker.
Some people believe that Graphology works, while others thinkits just a form of cold reading. Graphology is useful to learn about as you can use it as a reading on its own or integrate it with many effects where someone is asked to write something down. If you want to become skilled at Graphology very quickly then I recommend the "Grapho Deck" by Bart Bagget. Its cheap at the price and is a useful product.. http://www.myhandwriting.com |

Graphology is what the psychological pfrofession calls a "Projective Technique" and is, like other projective techniques, accepted by some and rejected by others.
Only the lay public and people like us (?) think of it as a "divination" technique. |
