I have got the pencil through dollar bill trick and was wondering if anyone had any ideas to liven it up? I really like the trick and use it a lot but is starting to get boring using the same trick over and over again. Have a good day fellow magicians.

Boring to you or boring to your audiences?
There's a BIG difference. If it's boring to you, you many not have done it often enough to re-discover the 'magic' in your own work. If it's boring to your audiences, then the trouble may not be with the trick! And wrapping it in a new routine isn't going to help. BTW, which method of pencil through bill are you referring to; there are many versions, from highly gaffed to pure sleight of hand. |

I'm talking about sleight of hand.

I had a piano teacher in college who told me that until a piece I was working on became boring for me to play, I couldn't even begin to start perfecting it artistically.
Just something to think about... Good luck, Richard Green

Matt,
If the sleights are boring to you remember something. If the audience is enjoying the effect then the sleight is doing its job. Leave it alone and try to concentrate on the presentation. Some of the best sleights that we have practiced over and over are done almost automatically, so that we can remember to smile, and have a good time with our magic. , |

There is an old Zen saying -- you must practice until it becomes boring, then practice until it becomes beautiful. Until you can do the trick without even thinking about it, you don't really know how to do it.
If this is the only trick you know, then it is probably time to learn another one.

Moreover, I've found that by practicing the sleights over and over, you build a rhythm into them that may lead to variations on it.
Case in point (and yes, I know this is someone else's sleight, but I found it on my own): just by repeatedly practicing a DL, I realized that if you do a slight wrist kill, and only turn one of the two cards face down, you're left with a card reversed at the second card from top. Hmmmm...cut to the middle, and you have a face up card ready to go in a face-down deck. Elementary, to be sure...but I found it by playing on my own, not by reading or watching. It was the result of practice. And I heartily agree with Bill; it's time to learn another trick.
Cheers,
