As you all probably know, I recently found a copy of the Grand Canyon special.
I hope this isn't too annoying but I felt I should share my thoughts on it. Its been a long while since I saw a piece of magic so well seamless and well prepared. The amazing thing is it's all based on old illusions that we know the workings of. I find myself watching this whole routine over and over. The story is touching, the girl acts perfectly! This routine is like a beautiful peice of music. It has tension and resolve - a humouress interlude - and a fitting ending. This is proof that old principles can be dressed up and weaved into a storyline to make a moving piece. the bits I like: (please indulge my reading into this this) ------------------------------------------------------------ * the girls in the phone booth scene. Even though the method is "obvious" to most of us here it just flows so naturally. The phone booth is perfect cover for the D-B. Her vanish is well thought out - the illusion is her feet vanish first- then the rest of her. The magician seems equally amazed when he loses her. * DC actually hired and old guy to walk by him as the song lyrics "there's a man at the train stop with tears in his eyes". Now that's dedication and planning! * the old lady on the bench. The background changes -the pillars suggest its a trainstop. the set up is amazing here: The lady is reading a newspaper while waiting for a train. So its congruent and fitting for DC to read the magazine. * The magazine changing into pictures of the girl. Now this is so rich with suggestion f romance. The guy is yearning for this girl- even when he picks up a magaine he sees her face. The point of this part was not a piece of magic for the audience but a look into the mind of a guy who lost the girl he loves ( trust me I know the feeling!) * After the moving bits the tension is released with a gentle surprise of the girl changes back into the old lady. At this point the audience was is so wrapped up in the storyline that the old lady bit is a cute surprise which makes them laugh but also draws them emotionally closer to the story. * The stacking of boxes. I don't know what it is but when he opens the doors there's something about the way the girl is stanidng inside there - its just perfect! * the ending autograph bit - that's a classic touch! Sorry for going on at length about a 21 year old special- but like I said its been a long while since a piece of magic actually got me more involved than looking at the thickness of a table. I hope those of you who havent seen this routine do get a chance to do so. IT may look dated now (because the look is!) but look past that. Well done To Copperfield. |

I agree, I just bought his DVD, "Illusions" a few weeks ago and he is (I think) the best entertainer in the world. He is great at everything he has done. I've had the pleasure to work with him on one of his card tricks he wanted to add to his shows and he is a perfectionist.
Nothing is ever perfect. And when I saw him do "Flying" I have to admit it brought tears to my eyes. |

And the song for that piece was perfect...

Where can I get copies of his specials? I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to see them (due to when I was born) and I can't find them anywhere. I see that he now has "Illusion" out... does that include a good amount of TV-special footage?

Exchanging with private individuals may be the best method to get the old videos.

I wish I could watch again that DC special... There is nothing about it in his "Illusion" DVD (although it is very worth the price!)

You can really see the change in David Copperfield's performing style over the years. Personally, I've always enjoyed the meaning and story lines in his older routines. To me, those routines had a lot more entertainment value and it was that style of magic that really inspired me.
