Hi. Please be gentle with me, as I am new to this wonderful place. My name is Paul Knight and I love performing close up magic. I have just purchased Deep Astonishment, which is a bloody excellent effect, the only problem being the wallet. My question is this. Does anybody know where I can obtain a good quality wallet compatible with the effect and also any original ideas on the performance?
Hope to hear from somebody soon. Many thanks Paul Knight (AKA wingnut) |

Paul,
I haven't seen it, but they offer a "Gourmet" version for about 30 bucks on their site http://www.deepastonishment.com Hope this helps. Later.... Steve |

Surely someone here has tried the new wallet by now, review anyone?

I have the new "Gourmet" wallet and it is a major improvement over the one that comes with "Deep Astonishment". You can show both sides openly at the beginning and if you are a risk taker can even hand it out for a quick examination.
It is a very well made wallet and is a "real world" wallet so it doesn't look proppy. I do have some concerns about the construction of the gimmick as it looks glued on and I am not so sure how it will stand up with use but till there is a problem, I give it a very high rating. Takes a good effect and makes it better. From Kona Hawaii... home of the world's best coffee. Barry

I think I will try to obtain this wallet.
Does anyone have any ideas with regards to the process of removing the cards? I find it a tiny bit strange that I remove the cards and to the spectator it may seem that there is no reason for this. Any ideas? |

The usual reason, I think in the instructions, is that you are trying to find the "special Soul Mate" card, but some people have chosen to learn a mnemonic version of finding the "right" cards where you relate each card to a letter of the alphabet. Now all you need do is fan through the cards, quietly arranging the ones you need toward the end of the deck. For tons more help, hints and other methods visit deepastonishment.com

I find the gourmet wallet to be a superior version than the flimsy vinyl wallet that comes with the original Deep Astonishment. I was wondering if anyone would recommend using this as a regular wallet to demonstate other tricks before performing DA? Magic with bills, credit cards, etc...

I agree the new wallet is great.

Is it a normal billfold wallet or something of similar dimensions to the vinyl original wallet/checkbook?

The Gourmet Wallet is a padded leather check book style wallet. The left side holds up to six credit cards. It comes with an extra credit card insert to hold more. It has room for a check book or writing pad. There is also a zipper compartment on the left side. Can be shown on both sides.

Why not do what Paul Harris himself does and use an envelope?

Wondering why the "envelope" instructions were not included with the original package.

Hm, I'm okay with the appearance of the wallet. To me, it's still incredibly stiff and I have concerns about getting the cards into it reliably. I've had a bit of a time trying to yank them out properly. I'm sure this is just something that with more work into the leather will become less of an issue. I'm also not quite sure the placement was ideal for the gimmick. Seems a bit open once it's been loaded, depending on the viewpoints of spectators. Also the question mark card can't seem to wedge entirely inside because of how the gimmick was stuck in the wallet. And lastly, I know I complain a lot, but it's DIRTY inside! My question mark card is covered in these long black trails, which I think are remnants of fluff that were coloured with a magic marker. However, all this aside, I still much prefer this wallet to the original. But I wanted to give all the negatives; maybe somebody has had similar difficulties? |

I've toyed with the idea of using the Mullica wallet as a "Gourmet" Deep Astonishment wallet. Those that have Mullica wallet will understand what I mean. Anybody try this yet?

Towlegde asked exactly what I want to know!
Being on the verge of buying both the DA and the Mullica wallet, I ask: can the Mullica be as effectively used as the gourmet DA wallet? Appreciate any and all educated/experienced responses. |

My God!!! If this were the real world and we could take cr*p stuff back to the shop, it seems to me that "Deep Astonishment" wouldn't last a second in the marketplace. I know of at least one major UK dealer that declines to sell this effetc simply because he doesn't want to deal with all the customers bringing it back!
Many magicians know that this is the "Anything Deck" with a number of refinements, and what a splendid piece of magic it is - but I don't care whether you charge $5 of $500 for it, it should at least be as good as the ad says it is. I have read far more complaints about "Deep Astonishment" than I have read compliments, and it strikes me as a complete con to subsequently release a "gourmet" version that simply does what the original version claims, but at a higher price. I wonder if Paul Harris is ashamed? |

Whilst I sympathise and don't disagree with your view the effect is nevertheless strong. I've no problem in going for the Gourmet Wallet. This can be obtained from the following link:- http://www.deepastonishment.com/ where you can also find some interesting adaptations on the presentation. MikeM |
