What are the effects you guys use to make the birthday child the star of the show. I have a few where I specifically call up the Birthday boy/girl but it's as if they are just a regular volunteer. Any ideas on how to make their moment with the magician more magical?

I use Ken Scott's version of "Fantasy Magician" - a BIG hit with both kids and adults. Ken has top reviews... check out this thread:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=17 It gives you many opportunities for memorable "kodak moments". |

I know some do the chair suspension with the bday child, or make the magic words "Happy Birthday _____." In terms of making the moment more magical, in Perform Like a Pro, there is a segment where Quentin suggest getting the child to give a rose to his mom on stage and say thank you, and awww moment.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

I always get the birthday child to help me with my coloring book routine, in which they are made the magician, dressed as a magician, and givin a magical stage name. It is great for photos that the parents want to make and it is a memorable thing.
Also, there is a newspaper cut out there that is really simple to do...I think Gene Anderson wrote about it in his newspaper magic book. You roll up a newspaper and cut it once.then when you unfold it, there is a large star cutout in the middle of the page. I believe it was ken scott I saw use it and hold it in front of the birthday child as he said "Tada the start of our show!" then he gave the child the paper. |

I don't remember where I got this idea...but it has been a GREAT boost for my birthday business. I bought two wooden, folding director's chairs. On the cloth back of each chair I had embroidered the words "BIRTHDAY STAR" and a shooting star. The chair attaches to the side of my Lefler Table with a velcro strap.
When I go to a party, the chair is the first thing unpacked. This is the VIP seat right up front and to my right...the position of honor. The birthday child is always close at hand for those special tricks and he/she has the coolest seat in the house. Best of all...the other kids see this and they ALL want their chance to sit in the "Position of Honor" chair. Skip

I do a lot of things in my b-day show to make the b-day child the star. Some of these ideas are as follows. I hope they may be of help to you.
- First off I make sure that when I get there I shake the young boy or girls hand and thank them for having me at their special day. This really makes the child feel special and I show him or her I appreciate them having me. - I always make sure the b-day child gets a front seat in the front row. - I use the b-day child's name as the magic word of the day. The magic does not happen unless we all say, "Happy B-day Matthew". This makes the child feel special because it is his or her name that creates the magic. - In the middle of my show, I always do a routine specially for the b-day child. This is usually my comedy cake bake routine that gets a lot of laughs with the laughs aimed at myself and the b-day child always getting things correct. It is a great photo opp fr the parents as I dress the child up as a chef to help me bake this cake. - At the end of the show I always float the b-day child with my chair suspension. I know many of you have read my post on this illusion, so I will not go into detail here. I love performing it and my routine is based upon the idea that you can not float unless you have 2 ingredients: 1) magic and 2) Imagination. I supply the magic.. but the birthday boy or girl has the best imagination of all and if we work as a team, anything is possible. At the moment the child is floating, my wife takes a polaroid pic. This is given to the child as a souvenir at the end of the performance. The look on the child's face when he or she sees the pic is priceless. - I also give the child a free magic kit as well as the photo and a certificate that says they are hereby an official magicians assistant. - I also have the b-day child come up in front of the group and to do one final big illusion by us all saying a BIG thank you to him and his mom for having us all here at the great party. These are just a few things I do at every kid show I perform at and really helps to make the child shine. Kyle

I forgot to mention the give aways as well...
I give the child an autographed photo, animal balloon, and a plastic top hat. Giveaways are treasures to these kids...even if it is just a balloon animal...they still got a souveneer from the show! |

But the key with give-aways is that you give something the child wants and feels good about. Something of value to them will get them remembering you and also feeling extra special.
I also give the birthday child a few items that the other kids do not get. However, every child there does get to go home with something. It is just the b-day child who gets the extra treatment and gifts.

I found a bunch of little decorative stars on a spring rooted in a cube that I modified by adding a photo of me saying Happy Birthday.
I make this appear by using a tube and asking everyone to think about the wishing star. I make sure that no one thinks about baked beans because that would not make the wishing star appear. I get them all chanting, "Wishing star, wishing star appear" and keep on making sure that no one is thinking about baked beans. I raise the cylinder and to my surprise I find three cans of baked beans. Oh no! I was thinking about baked beans! We try it again, I re-cover up the three cans of baked beans and we chant again, and this time it works, and now the audience is surprised because it appears like the beans have been transformed into the wishing star, and I say happy birthday, and present it to the birthday child. (I'm thinking about changing my name to Kyle and getting a red jacket too. Just kidding) |

Kyle: Maybe that is so. I think we are both suave, sophsiticated and have a great taste in clothes. hehe =) Sorry Tom. The red jacket is taken by us Kyle's. You have to change to a different color or change your name. hehehe

Maybe I'm simple, but I sell and work my birthday show as being based around the birthday child - he/she is the star of the moment, full stop.

Hi,
Since my show is audience participation I involve all the children. I just focus more on some things with the Birthday Child - like patter regarding the child or his/her name, asking them to assist with some things which I claim to have trouble with, the birthday child saves the day!! I also purchased several Happy Birthday certificates at a Teachers store and present the B'day child with one along with a Daffy Duck balloon animal. All the kids including the birthday child get the regular balloons but the Duck and certificate is my birthday gift to them. Chrystal Red Jacket...Kyle...hmmm thinking maybe that's the secret to success. :O) |

Oh, absolutely...too late now though...you already missed out! It is one of the best secrets of success, but now the cat is out of the bag!

Well that's it then....I've ordered myself a nice red jacket and applied for a name change. I really want to be suave, sophisticated and have great taste in clothes.

Hehehe oh man what have we Kyles started now? It is pretty ironic how we are both named kyle and both magicians and both have matching red jackets. Oh ..um... yeash I um....er planned it that way. Yeah I read your mind.. my latest trick. You guys are not buying a word of this are ya? Didn't think so. hehe
Actually in all honesty, the red jacket came out of a search and a long process of finding out just who I was on stage, who I was not and developing a character that made sense to both me and the audience. I also wanted an outfit that fit my personality on stage and made myself stand out from other magicians in my area and to stand out in the bust streets of the festivals and fairs I tend to work most often. It is kind of hard to miss a guy wearing black pants, shoews with white spats, full black on black vest with gold pocket watch, a band collar shirt and a red jacket. Kind of says.. hey look over here... you may see some pretty fun stuff and have a great time. I also have jackets in Blue and in Yellow although I hardley ever wear them at all. People have actually helkped brand my look. They remember me as the guy with that red jacket and those very cool shoes. lol It works for me. PS: Crystal.. I think you are beautiful just the way you are. Why ruin it by becoming another Kyle. lol Trust me,, you are better off being crystal hehehe Kyle

Ahh thanks for that nice compliments Kyle. (Politeness must be a Klye quality too). Well I'll keep my purple dress but after those nice words I'll just appear with a red face.
Thanks Kyles! |
