I'll have to agree with John on that one. Although I have several really nice reels I have accumulated over the decades, I like using one that actually is for keycards. I got it at a nurses' uniform shop for a dollar. It is white but Band Aids will stick to it just fine. I especially like the clip on it. I use it to keep the thread out until I'm ready for it to be reeled in. My expensive reels don't really work any better. If they were not status symbols to other magicians, I might be willing to trade them for quieter, cheaper, more effective reels.

Hey Bob,
Solution: We take the quieter, cheaper, more effective reels and sell them back at conventions for $50 each. Suddenly they will be in vogue! No problem.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

UFO,
Oh No! Then they will understand the system. Syldini Silks get into that category. My real ones from Tony (1969) are in storage, even the special color ones he made me for my dove act. The fake after-market ones Lucy uses to teach the horses (unicorns on stage) tricks because they are durable and will go into the regular wash. When I do Slydini's unknotting silk routine, I use real silks just as he taught me and then I give the volunteer the silk of his/her choice. People just won't believe that the magic is in the secret, not the prop. Dumbo's feather is alive and well. But if makes another magician, why not? This is the entertainment business! (Now let me show you the trunks of vintage collectable magic stuff I bought from old so-in-so. They look a lot like the ones in WalMart and Dollar Tree!) Bob Magic By Sander |

Always do proper research before you buy anything my grandfather use to say and here is a prime example.

There was a a version also called "Hyper silk" that you tied the silk onto the stand and pulled it off. I think there is also some stuff in an old booklet called "Naughty Silks" by Harold Rice. there was a fine version published in Genii magazine in 1970 (Japan themed issue) that had a wonderful handling by Hideo Kato ...who is also a frequent poster in this forum.

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki shows the Rice "Dissolvo" moves in his "Blendo Rope" routine in The Wizards' Journal #16, only he uses the moves to pull one rope through another. The photo explanations he gives, using a rope instead of a silk, makes it very easy to understand.
With a Witch's Broomstick for Halloween, it's a great addition to a "dancing broom" routine to explain how you can tell a REAL Bewitched Broom from an ordinary one. The test involves trying to decorate the broom with a ribbon, flag or a lady's scarf. A real broom will take decoration, but a Bewitched broom justs casts it off and will not allow itself to be decorated. If doing the Andrew Mayne floating broom with a banner or cloak covering, be sure to finish by having the cloak fall through the broom at the end, proving that a Bewitched Broom will not allow itself to be decorated. That also helps cover the move you need to put the "you know what" back on "you know where."

The Paul Diamond reel I picked up 35 years ago is still going strong. Easy to repair yourself and quiet. Just picked up the Elduco Sweedish reel from Ammar and now this is my favorite. Very well made and more quiet then the PD.

There is no substitute for good equipment. I would be the first to agree. But don't pass up good effects because you can't get your hands on the best equipment. Silk through broomstick or microphone stand as an MC bit is not exposed with a cheaper reel.

I have a good Paul Diamond Reel, some P&L and some original Kirkendall's that I would be willing to part with. I have take them all apart and service them. All seem to working fine.

Hey Richard I've been looking for a good reel for years. I need it only for the silk thru mic stand. I don't mind noise, but I need it to be fast and strong. Which one do you recomend? Thanks

I prefer the Kirkendall as it is a little cleaner design inside. It makes it much easier to work on if you ever need to replace the thread.
