Just received Hank Lee's Extra with this advertised in it. $54.95 for a birthstone ring and a cluster diamond ring. Not bad. Anyone get this and can review yet?

Harry allen demonstrated this for me last week at the "mars" convention in Eilat.
I think the effect went over quite well. The ring itself is very good quality and the working is a simple breeze leaving you with just the routine and patter. it is all self contained and self working but couldn't realy say it was worth the price for something that I wouldnt get any use out of in my children stage show so, personaly, I didn't get it. hope this helps, enjoy, dani |

No big deal looks like. Not really worth $50 by the description of the effect. It apparently can only be done with 2 birthstones since they don't brag that it can be done with any birthstone. (ie. go from opal to ruby to amethyst). This sounds to be only usefull for exactly what the description says....impressing your girlfreind / fiance. Or perhaps you might order one to use for a very special client who wanted a wedding proposal to be part of the show.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

When I first got this I thought it might be obvious. The ring they supply is a new style ring readily available on the market and in many stores. I thought people might recognize the ring as a two style ring. I was VERY WRONG. This has been one of the best investments I have ever made. I work as a restaurant magician full time, and this has been a most effective piece. It is the perfect opening effect and will allow you to approach tables that you can tell wouldn't like card tricks. Such as a table full of elderly women.
I like to go up and show a table full of ladies the birthstone ring, and say I bought this for my girlfriend but she doesn't like it. I ask there opinion of the ring. Now ladies LOVE to give their opinion of jewerly and they will tell you what they think of the ring. Anyhow I say my girlfriend wanted diamonds, do you think she'd like this one better? I then change the ring into the diamond cluster. If they are open to more magic you can proceed, if not I move on. Never found a table yet I couldn't approach with this ring, going up to a lady and asking her opinion of this ring you got for your girlfriend/mother has never failed to get an answer. The change of the ring is totally unexpected and very magical. I have found children in a restaurant love this. Even the younger ones can tell the ring has changed. This has proven to be a big fooler and is one of the most perfect tricks for walk-around I've come across. It's one of those tricks that will almost invariablely get the ladies to say "How did you do that?" The directions that come with this leave much to be desired, just a couple of paragraphs. You will need to spend some time developing your own way to make the ring change so it is not obvious you are using a gimmicked ring. I thought ladies might recognize this as a reversable ring so commonly tauted on the homeshopping networks, but my handling so well conceals the change, that nobody has ever said that is one of those changing rings advertised on TV. I do recommend this trick highly. I think the ring itself is overpriced as I've seen the same ring on ebay going for just a few bucks in the jewerly section and you can get the rings on home shopping networks for around $19.95. For now the majority of people are not aware of these rings, and for now they will fool people. Take advantage while you can. I fear some day this new style ring will become too well known and even with my handling some people may just recognize what the ring is, just from it's appearance. However for now it's my favorite close-up trick. When the day comes that people in the restaurant tell me they have seen those rings on TV then I will stop using them. Devin Knight |

I met Harry Allen at the TAOM convention in September. He showed me this trick, and it stunned me. He showed me how he did it, and I have to say, it totally fooled me, even though it was so simple. Maybe not worth a lot of money, so maybe just throw money to the side every once in a while, but a great trick none the less.

I have heard similar negative comments on the ring from someone about these reversable rings. He was called on it by a girl he showed it too, that is when he realized it was a commercially available item in many costume jewelry stores and that many women could be familiar with it.
Also the cheap quality would make me reluctant to ask strange ladies what they thought about me giving this ring to my girlfriend...they might be polite, but actually thinking I am one cheap son-of-a-*****. How about just using two decent quality rings and a Bobo switch? |

I purchased this ring from Harry Allen at Daytona Magic after attending the Daytona Beach Magic Convention this past November. I side with Devin and MagicMan226 in that the effect offers a good "Wow" factor. I believe a switch could also work if you could come up with a comparable ring set for the money, but I was consumed by the ingenuity of the ring's design enough to spend the bucks.
The effect works well for me and I've been considering a backup ring, but as noted, I'm wrestling with the 'quality-for-the-price' issue. If there are less expensive versions available, and this design is due to be exposed, it's only a matter of time until the surprise factor will dwindle, so, unfortunately, that has to be my bottom line. I agree with Devin, that for now, the trick has excellent impact and will remain in my arsenal for the time being. I'm going to keep my wheels spinning on this effect, however, and see how the future plays out. I may even try a switch routine if I can find the right rings. |

To update my December 21st post, this effect continues to be very successful for me, even when practiced on my local colleagues of the craft. I had the opportunity to discuss the switch option with Harry Allen in a recent phone call. I had to agree with him that the benefit of using this ring as opposed to a switch is the fact you can finish clean. With the responses I've had from this routine, I highly recommend this effect. With practice, you can enhance your impact just using your opposite hand for cover, producing instant change for amazing reactions. It has been worth the money as it gets very favorable spectator comments.
