This is a topic that is a bit difficult to word in a single sentence or topic heading, so I'll fill it out a bit here.
What must a performer do the moment he or she comes on stage, in order to be successful? What one thing can a performer do that will spell total doom for his or her work? It doesn't have anything at all to do with skill or looks, although both of these can add to it. But if you can't do it, you will find your act sailing right down the tube. I'll post an answer later.

Due to a number of requests -- two is a number -- I shall now post my answer.
The first thing that a performer -- ANY performer -- must do is make the audience like him or her. If you don't do that, they won't like your magic, your juggling, your music, your comedy -- or whatever else you do. Even a good villain has to be offset by a character the audience likes. This came up in a conversation with Gary Darwin -- confidant of almost all the magicians who have worked Las Vegas -- with respect to a mutual friend who had just been booted out of the casino he had worked in for the past couple of years. Gary said, "I told him when he first came to Vegas that he needed to be more likable. The audiences just didn't like him." So, how do you get your audiences to like you? First, you have to like them. You have to LOVE them. Make them think you care about them. Suggestion -- read How to Win Friends and Influence People and The Power of Positive Thinking. Those two books have made a lot of people successful. In the words of the late Samuel Goldwyn -- "The most important thing in this business is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you've got it made."
