Uh... unless it is called tenkai, or told how to use it in a magic effect, then it isn't exposure.
I bet you get all riled when vernon would do the "fake french drop" and when magicians talk about "palming" cards before doing a no-palm cards to pocket too.... |

Expertmagician,
I would just like to let you know that the glim that is held in the cheat's hand is not as large as you think that it is. Furthermore, the back of it is painted black so that it will blend in with a black shirt or jacket. Next, the sides have been coated with a rough material so as to facilitate easier palming. Finally, if a capable cheat "gets this on", then nobody will see the palmed shiner anyhow. If the reflective surface was too small, then one might have to put extra effort into reading the cards as they are dealt. Careful practice will afford the opportunity to use the luxuriously larger shiner more quickly and without detection. A shiner is not easy to use. If you don't believe me then try this (this method may be best practiced with a friend.) Sit at a table and deal out ten hands of Hold 'Em (this is the EASIEST for you to try since each hand is comprised of only 2 pocket cards) with the cards face up. As each card lands on the table, have your pal/partner turn it face down. When the dealing is complete, and the cards are face down, try to remember the hands as they were dealt. I think that you will see that operating a "light" is not as simple an operation as one would think and is more of an excercise in memory and focus than it is in careful palming and concealment. This is why a shiner is best played at the end of the night, when there are less (and more exhausted) players left at the table. Even if you can nail the practice drill, ask yourself these questions: 1) Did I deal at normal speed? 2) Could I REALLY do this under fire? 3) Could I REALLY do this with added distractions? In a game, after a hand, (bad) Poker players usually banter with one another about their hands aloud. This involves naming cards, and combinations of them and can really throw you off while trying to focus. 4) Would it be as easy to read the cards a) at normal speed, b)in a game, c)with distractions, d)off of a mirror? There are many more very serious questions that one must apply to his/herself prior to using a flick in a game, but I am sure that you get the point. A small mirror is really not the most desireable trait of a shiner. The best thing to have when using a shiner is a loud-mouthed partner who can distract the attention of your "clients" whilst you deal. You see, misdirection is not only a magician's technique. Interesting because most of the more deceptive glims that I have seen have been 1/2 inch or less, sometimes being held between fingers, in the natural curl of the hand.
Other more deceptive methods have been part of jewlery, etc. Women sometimes have an advantage because of jewlery and long fingernails

I did see Forte demo a light and that was big. Well it was a lot bigger than I expected.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
