The Wizard Way is to think outside the box; to do away with boxes and tubes whenever possible. People have to see ME as the source of magic, not some piece of junk I haul around. They expect a Wizard to be able to just appear in a cloud of smoke... or forget the smoke and just appear. If I make someone levitate, they should just take off from a standing position...or at the most, by sitting on a broom. I am not allowed the convenience of putting someone in a box just to make them disappear. I have to be able to point my wand and they disappear... like magic!

I hate to say it, but after watching the really bad video clips on Brett Daniels website I certainly won't go out of my way to see his show.
I still have nightmares of watching him do an effect using B.A. and seeing the gimmick fall to the floor in plain view. Sorry Brett...we all noticed.

It is all about evoking emotion. You can do that with a story ala Copperfield, with theatrical trappings (costumes, lighting, sets) and it can be done with just stage presence and personality. I've seen the Pendragons do a terrificic show, well received by the audience, by mostly dragging out one "magic box" after another, but they had charisma and tons of personality.
There are some very UN-entertaining illusionists and magicians out there, and it is not limited to illusionists with boxes. Let's not forget the magicians who believe they are "helping" the trick with thier "clever" banner. Watch the audience, if they are yawning or talking to each other, it is probably not entertaining. Showmanship is king, and it comes in many forms.
