Hi everyone!
I know these are both by the same author, and I managed to get a hold of what I'm told is a rare copy of Smoke and Mirrors a while back. But I've just stumbled across a magic shop that has a couple of new copies of Bannon's Impossibilia. So I ordered one of them. Couldn't resist!! What I want to know is, is there much crossover of material between these two books? I've read the trick listing of the Impossibilia DVD and there seems to be a lot of effects that are in Smoke and Mirrors. I guess it doesn't matter now that I've ordered it, but I would like to satisfy my own curiousity. Any other comments on these two books? Favourite tricks, etc? I'm quite fond of Heart Of The City and Timely Departure in Smoke and Mirrors. Thanks heaps everyone! -- Topher PS. Can anyone give me a description of the routine Play It Straight Triumph? I think this is a routine a local magic store owner showed me years ago, where all the cards in the same suit as the one you selected appear face up and in order, except the selected card still in your hand. And if this is not right, and someone knows the routine I'm describing, could they let me know what it is please? Thanks!! |

That sounds exactly like 'Play It straight' triumph.
There is no cross over of material that I am aware of...so there could be! I think 'Smoke and Mirrors' is a much better book.

There is no crossover. Both books are good, but I think Smoke and Mirrors is better.

MagicTopher: that IS "play it straight triumph". There is a TON of great material is all of his books.
Discrepant city (is another great!)... a prediciton effect where you remove three cards from the deck (as predictons)and the participant selects ANY card. That card it shown to match the other 3. EASY AS PIE & GOOD STUFF! Andrew: You can look on Ebay, or call some various locations: I have PM'ed you a place that may have it. Anything of Bannon's is a lot of fun to read and to do. I recommend them. I directed a jaded friend of mine to Bannon's new "Dear Mr. Fantasy" book, and his response was explosve. He raved about the book and thanked me because he "almost missed out". 'nuff said! Sean |

Smokes and Mirrors is better..if you're more interested in cards I guess..Impossiblia is loaded with interesting ideas related to close up magic with small objects-if my memory serves me right....not exactly impromptu..but workable ideas..
I thought play it straight triumph was in smokes and mirror.. |

Heya guys!
Thanks heaps for all your help. I really appreciate it. I got Dear Mr. Fantasy when it came out a few weeks back and absolutely love it. So simple, but the effects are really awesome. Andrew, there is a rumour floating around at the moment that Smoke and Mirrors will be re-printed sometime before 2006. Having said that, I heard the same rumour about Strong Magic for 3 years before it actually was re-printed. My source was on this very board, who claimed to be in contact with Richard Kaufman himself. Hope you find a copy. It's a great book! Thanks again everyone. -- Topher |

Hi,
Thanks, magic h2os for the info. I will try to find out from them and hopefully they still have the copies. MagicTopher, Yes, I heard a lot of positive reviews about the Smoke & Mirrors book many years ago, sadly, now it's hardly to get a new copy now. - Hopefully the rumours ring true, I will surely get the smoke & mirror book. I like Bannon's materials a lot. Yes, guys, I have one last question, if compare these 3 Bannon's books, how do you rate the books in terms of the materials in the books namely Impossibilia, Smoke & Mirrors and Dear Mr. Fantasy?????? Or DMF is the BEST today?????? Cheers, Andrew Check out my new card magic eBooks "The Magnificent Queens" & "Triple Charms" at: www.cardicianden.com My Cardician Den Blog: http://pasteboards.blogspot.com/ |

I think this was briefly discussed in another thread that DMF and Smokes & Mirrors are 2 different kinda books and it's sorta hard to compare both of them.
DMF is purely on card tricks, whereas Smokes & Mirrors is a mixture of cards and other stuff. Personally, I would give both these books the same rating. And regarding "Play it straight triumph"...it's in Impossibilia. In fact, it's the 1st trick of the book |

S&M is mainly on card tricks. S&M remains one of my favourite books today and I still use some of the effects inside. Very commercial routines and nothing knuckle busting.
And damon, posting that the book sucks without any explanations really would just get you flamed in the forums. |

Yes, damOn, what's the reason you said "Sucks"!!!????
I read so many reviews about Bannon's book, it seems impossible, can you please elaborate more??? Otherwise, people in this forum are going to fire you. I'm sure he is being sarcastic. It is a very good book with a few magician foolers in it so it would be a shame if everyone had it! [Not a shame for John Bannon I know]

I think markymark shares the same feelings as I do...It'd be a shame if it'd fall into too many hands...but yes..I was just as jd salinger would say "horsin 'round"
DMF is a great book.....mediocre sleights, ingenius setups and application..and I think that's as good as a book can get...reading wise.. Hope no one got inflammed by the comment.. |

I've had both books shortly after they were first released. Over the years there are just a handful of effects that I consistently use and two of them are out of these books. I couldn't remember which book but just checked and they're both from Smoke and Mirrors. They are "Tattoo You", which I've never seen anyone comment on but the effect hit me when I first read the book and I've gotten great audience reaction. The other is "Vacuum Packed", which was one of the effects talked about a lot when the book was first released.
