A friend told me about a feature on 'This Morning' for the past few weeks. Apparently a psychic makes written predictions about people and also gives an aura reading via a video feed. A psychologist also uses profiling tests to give a character reading of the individual. The results are compared for accuracy and discussed.
Sounds like an interesting project. Apparently it's shown on episodes on Mondays so if your about when it's on keep an eye out. Any further information on this would be appreciated. Kind Regards, Martin Colclough. |

It's a very light-hearted piece. The psychic is Mia Dolan and I forget the skeptic's name but he's has previously appeared on This Morning with Keelan Leyser doing metal bending.
Six weeks prior to the show, Mia Dolan sits with her subject. She doesn't talk to them but merely writes several predictions of things that will happen over the next few weeks, which are then sealed in an envelope. Then, the skeptic has the subject take a written personality test. On the show, Mia's predictions are read out for the subject to respond to. On the shows I've seen, the subject's reactions have been very flat and often dismissive. She's had very few hits and has often said something similar too "These events might still happen!" The predictions are very generic, along the lines of problems with your teeth or back and having a whirlwind weekend (for one of the younger subjects). The personality tests are more accurate but then they would be - the subject is providing the information! At the end of the series, the public will phone vote to decide who was more successful, the psychic or the skeptic. Unfortunately, the psychic and skeptic are attempting different things - the major flaw in this whole piece! The psychic is making predictions whereas the skeptic is making personality statements. Far better to have had a non-psychic cold reader up against the self-proclaimed psychic. That would've been interesting. |

But who could do it?
That would be the problem. Becouse for all of their bluster I have yet to see a good skeptic reader. Except for me of course. Jack H.O.A_X |

Yes, but skeptics don't claim to be able to predict the future, or get information via supernatural power. I don't know what Mia claimed (I haven't seen this show), but I assume that if she's participating she must have claimed that she could divine information (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not sure if that's a flaw or not; I guess it depends on how they are describing this experiment. Obviously the skeptic and the reader are not doing equivalent things. Quote:

To expand on my post, isn't this ALWAYS the problem?
A psychic will claim they can do this and that, a non-psychic will state they can do the same this and that. At the end of the day, all the non-psychic is doing is replicating what the 'psychic' does. It doesn't prove anything. But I am absolutely convinced that the This Morning team could've found a performer willing to go on TV and state "I'm not a psychic, everything I do is the result of a combination of psychology, deception and linguistics - but I can make predictions that are just as accurate, or more accurate than those of the psychic." |

Again, I haven't seen this show, but I think I disagree that the non-psychic is "replicating what the 'psychic' does." What did the non-psychic claim he could do, and what did the psychic claim?

I concur with Howard.Utter garbage, with no protocol of any description. The psychologist is Dr.David Lewis, though and has shown Mia Dolan to be hopeless;although she has made a fair job of that by herself.

If a psychic wants to go on a fishing expedition they should claim they are psychologists and give a test. There is some thinking out there that some of the popular business personality tests are forms of cold reading or more correctly Forer readings. The Briggs Meyers test comes to mind. You can cold read psychology tests if you know what they are looking for. |

Thing is that most psychics belive their press.

The subject answers questions and then the answers are analyzed--where else would the findings come from? Psychologists don't claim to be clairvoyant, do they? |

There's lovely English gentleman called Ken Pumphrey (retired magician in Aberdeen). In his eighties now Ken told me the story of how he used a lady partner in a phsycic act (I 'think' maybe in the 40s & 50s?). Anyway he said that suddenly she started 'getting things' that were not part of the act in any way. She finally quit to become a medium. I asked him his opinion and Ken, a skeptic at that time, said he simply had to believe she was genuine and that it had changed his opinion of what 'might be' (paraphrased).
