Effects where people are involved with the show.

You can do a silk vanish or you can do a silk vanish with lots of interaction.
For outdoor shows in a similar environment where I try to build a crowd, and get money in my hat, I use: cards as a warm-up silk vanish rings cups and balls

If you simply look through the posts in The Side Walk Shuffle, you will find this answered many times. You will find the Cups and Balls mentioned a lot.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

You really do need to constantly engage your audience. This does not always mean you have to use them on your staging area. it simply means you are talking to them and directing sttention towards them. you engage them all in various ways.
Another thing I realized this weekend was that if I had too much down time between effects, I lost a good portion of the crowd. Once, my music messed up and my wife spent time to find the right track. That alone saw people and gave them a chance to walk away. We fixed the problem by creating a playlist the next day for all the music I would use on the street. it made a big difference cause the natural flow just flowed from one piece into the next. This allowed me to keep the crowd there longer. Kyle

I absolutely agree with Peter. I found out the hard way this past weekend what works and what does not work. I learned to adapt my routines to really show off my character and personality and to really engage my audiences the entire time. I was not so much involved in the effect as I was in getting people to interact in the comedy and the fun that was taking place on the street. The more I did that, the more the people loved it.

Kyle,
Do you think this experience is going to make you a better performer overall? I know it certainly did me. Jim

ABSOLUTELY. I learned more in this one weekend then I have in a very long time. Just trying to learn how to draw a crowd and then how to engage them and keep them intersted was so valuable to me. The entire drive home I was telling my wife how excited I was at what we learned and what we managed to accomplish.

Way to go Kyle!
That rush that you got the first time out, the thrill of having it all in your hands and learning so much in one setting about; the crowd, the magic, and then the money, is absolutely addicting, and it doesn't go away very soon either. BroDavid

BroDavid:
Thanks. It was an amazing rush and a sense of accomplishment not to mention I learned so much in that one day then I have in a long time. Experiences I can learn and grow from. It was addicting like a good drug. The sense of starting with nothing and ending up with a crowd of over 200 every time I di a performance was astounding to me. I had never tried it on that level before and to have it work was a great feeling. Here I was doing my manip intro to music and I look up to see 150 people watching me with eyes wide open. I was in awe. I thought to myself, does this really work? Can I do this each time? Can I keep the crowd? I found out that for me that day the answers were YES, YES and a big YES! It was so great. I can not thank you guys enough for giving me both your time and attention and tips to prepare me for that event. I simply would not have even been ready had it not been for a lot of you. So my hats off to you all. Kyle
