Well for cut and restore and Prof. Nightmare I will use white clothes line from any supermarket. BUT, for getting tied up, there is nothing like soft magicians rope. Besides being soft and pure white, it is a little thicker.

Please take this in the spirit of debate; Wal-mart is NOT driving out all retail stores in this country. Even if you hate the place, you will find a success story for every 'hard luck, can't compete story.' For every family-owned retailer who thinks they were put out of business, you will find a family-owned restuarant, family-owner service business, family-owned car wash, family-owned development company, family-owned real-estate company, minority-owned nail shop, immigrant-owned specialty grocery store, and family run small-town bank, that is grateful beyond measure that Wal-mart moved into town and built a commerce center that drives business to them. Also ask the minimum-wage and cash-economy families that are thankful for the inexpensive items that make their life so much easier. In all fairness, Jesse |

Ok, I work in a magic shop and the markup is just the markup, like at any shop. You get something in at one price and mark it up a percentage. There are rent, utilities, and employees to pay and you have to do it or you would not make any money or survive.
The magic rope is from a suplier just like anything else. If your shop is buying stuff at Walmart and marking it up then that's messed up, they could be getting better rope for you wholesale from a dealer. For some things lots of different rope will do, for others, you need a smooth rope with no core. If you want the knot to just slip out and vanish visually, then you need soft rope. On the note of buying things from a magic shop. Just think about all the junk you have ordered online before, and then think about how much help you have recieved by your local shop guy. If this does not make sence you need to find a new shop to go to.

To say that Wal-mart is at fault for driving out small retailers is as illogical as saying that David Copperfield is ruining magic for other magicians and should be shut down. Get real! Failing to recognize that superior providers do exist has contributed greatly to the dumbing down of America. Ignorance never changes facts except to those fooling themselves.
Rope comes in many varieties. However, the same is true of many other things. A glass of water at one restaurant is free and put on the bill at another. It has absolutely nothing do with the water. The key is the paying customer. Don't forget that at Coor's that same "rocky mountain spring water" that makes the beer expensive, is used to wash the trucks and flush the toilet. It is the water that is available there. Magic shops buy rope in extremely small quantities and very rarely from the manufacturer. Every middleman charges for handling the goods. That will add to the price. It won't change the rope. I'm the silk importer. I see the same there. It is very reasonable to assume that I have more silk in my brief case than most magic dealers have in their store. A case in point, is that what most magicians assume is the largest silk dealer in the USA only carries 10 of my 13 colors. For a retailer he is very well stocked. He only needs what the customers can buy in a reasonable time. His job is to serve his customers, not to offer all the magician silk varieties, colors, sizes, etc. available. There is a chage for that. Customers apparently find it reasonable. Why should cotton rope be different? If you are a magician who only buys one hank of rope or three silks at a time, don't beat up the magic shop for charging you for bulk-breaking the goods down so that is possible. He's providing you the service you seek. Don't forget that most performing magicians charge a hotel much more per show for a one-time banquet than for a two-week run. We think that's fair too! It's not called the land of opportunity for no reason.
Economists assume #1 Perfect Knowledge - Everyone knows all the prices and all the offerings all the time. And #2 Perfect mobility - Consumers are free to take advantage of any and all offers. Marketers assume #1 Ignorance - People generally do a very poor job of researching prices and products offered. And #2 Immobility - Consumers are not free to accept all offers. I've taught both Economics and Marketing in the MBA program at the University level. Guess why I don't admit to being an economist? (It may also explain why my children have trust funds.) An honest Economist must also accept that starvation is a natural death. Yet they are also the first to support government welfare programs (redistribution of earned resources programs) to give a free ride to the unproductive consumers at the expense of the productive consumers. Consistant? Only with getting re-elected in a nation where 31% supports it all but only get one vote. Vote-buying may really be the oldest profession. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

For what its worth, we really like the rope that Daryl sells. You can check it out at: http://www.foolerdoolers.com/store/products.asp?category=110 Plus, he always ships super fast! Normally, we have it the next day after ordering, 2 days at the latest. At least that has been our experience. I guess it helps that we also live within a few hours of him, so that doesn't delay the mail time too much.
Great for doing rope work. |

A guy at a lecture was using some extra thick rope from Hank Lee (Elite rope?). It has a nice solid appearance to it and I think it improves the quality of the performance (nice solid rope vs. scraggly-looking string). It's about a buck per foot, but if you're a pro (which I'm not), it's probably worth it.

Yesterday, I bought a hank of rope from a dealer.
I could have gone to Walmart or some other place to buy it cheaper. But every time I go to those stores, I can't seem to buy thumbtips. My friends in the Brick and Mortar shops seem to be more knowledgeable that the greeter lady at Walmart. I am as cheap and self-centered as the next guy and that is why I don't mind spending a bit more to keep these shops open. Peace, Parson

Gentlemen
I have "professors nightmare" made from Daryl's rope, I have Pavel "krazy Knot", "acrobatic knot", a custom rope trick that only I do made from Fun Inc. rope, a ring, and rope set using Daryl's rope, a custom "Knotty Knot", plus a large assortment of rope magic books, tapes, and DVD's. I am already spending my rope magic dollar at many magic establishments, and I deserve to save a buck on the throw away rope I use for "cut and restore". HAVE FUN Al Angello

Depends on the rope I guess... I use cheap rope for most of my tricks however and use the savings to purchase other items.

I would like to put in a vote on Daryl's rope. I love this stuff. I searched high and low for good looking and feeling rope. I've purchased the walmart stuff. I've purchased the big lots clothes line. I've purchased every kind of cotton rope I could find. I've also purchased Elite magicians rope from Camirand (really good stuff btw- both types!).
But.... I like Daryl's rope the best. And it's really fast delivery from him too. For professional rope you just can't go wrong. My second choice would be Camirand stage rope. of course the standard caveat of not used for cut and restored blah blah blah. 2cents ~Craig |

Good rope gives it often also in building markets!!!
Or flower shops, or tinkering shops. It does not have to be correctly white nevertheless! In Germany there is Hornbach, a building market. There is rope directly from the role! 1 meter of 50 cent! |

I buy nothing but Daryl's ropes. He charges $0.50 to $0.60 per foot and usually it is in my mailbox within 1 to 2 days after I place my order.
In comparison, if I buy a high grade braided nylon rope from my local large hardware store I would pay $0.50 to $0.70 per foot. I would rather support Daryl and get the best rope, in my opinion, that is out there for the type of rope magic I prefer. |
