I am interested in a "finger chopper" type of effect. Would appreciate comments about Impossible Penetration. To me it sounds like an interesting variation. Any better ones for this type of effect?

The impossible penetration is beautifully made and looks great. People may have seen a finger chopper, but I bet they've never seen one where the blade stays on their finger after penetration. I strongly recommend it and it is a great price for such a fine piece of magic. The only possible problem is that they can't examine part of it. If you present it right, they won't care though. I actually let them shortly handle this piece. It gives them the 'feeling' of it being normal. Hope this helps!

Boy, I disagree. I would let them handle it completely freely without any worry, except for them breaking it
I don't know if they are all the same, but mine has no tell of the secret, and is rather tough to actually get out of place without knowing what to do. This is a beautiful effect, and a beautiful piece. Having a piece of Wood penetrate seems so fair, I really love this thing! |

I dunno. The prop is very well made, but it's such a weird, unnatural looking thing. I'd feel weird dragging out a miniature "head/hand chopper" out of my pocket...

Say its an old cigar chopper and you like to experiment, as a magician. Could be a believable story....well maybe.

I have this piece and like it very much. I would never use it in an impromptu setting, but as part of a more formal presentation it's great. If you pull a set of sponge balls or hot rod out of your pocket, there's no reason you couldn't whip out something like this. But it is clearly a magician's prop. I don't have a big problem with this, because I like magician's props - they bring the feeling of a "Show".
I would never let a person handle the item for more than a second or two and even then I would remain "in control" of the spectator and the prop. There are choppers you can let spectators examine more closely, and to be honest, I don't know how those ones work, but to me they look like they are obviously gimmicked in a way that must simply lock in a deceptive manner. Impossible penetration creates a more powerful illusion even though it's less examinable. |

I use both impossible penetration and hades finger chopper - I also used tenyos see through finger guilotine when i first started magic. Tenyos was lovely because it was see through but couldn't be inspected.
Hades is brilliant because it can be inspected in two parts (blade and body) seperately. Impossible penetration is ulta brilliant because not only can you inspect it (done propery) but as mentioned it comes out of the stocks around the finger. Either way I tell my audience that this contraption used to be known in France as a guilotine and used to punish bad doers. I call it a magicians test because not everyone knows this but anyone could do magic after they learn and undergo this "magic test". If they are not a real magician the finger would fall off but if they are a real magician the blade would penetrate the finger. Etc etc. (that's part of my routine). Both hades and impossible penetration are well worth the expence - in fact, they are not expencive at all realy. |

The absolute best (and I own ALL OF 'EM) is the Mafia Manicure if you can find one. If not, the Hades chopper is the best.

I would have to disagree with you Ty on "they can't examine part of it". I have had mine now for quite a few years and it is still one of my favorite close up tricks to do. Not only is it easy to do but it is a stunner and it can be freely examined all day and they will never figure it out. I have never ran into a problem in the hundreds of times I have show this. That is what sells this trick and as you know, people like to handle the props just to convince themselves that it really could be magic. I give this trick one thumb up. I cut my other one off learning how to do it properly.

Then again, you can usually feel the "grabbiness" of a spect. If they're fixed on finding out secrets and being a butt, don't let them hardly handle it. If they're laid back and enjoying it for entertainment purposes, sure, let em see it for a while. You can usually feel your audiences anyway.

I just got one of these a couple of months ago, and I think it's an elegant piece. I feel the whole device can withstand a very high level of scrutiny.
Very highly recommended. Mark |

It is a nice piece to have and impossible for the spectator to fathom, but the prop tends to be found in drawers or dens and is perhaps used for a parlour-style performance.
It's a difficult prop to explain if you suddenly produce it from your pocket, but with a bit of careful thought toward presentation, an effective storyline can heighten the impact. I would caution against random handling. It has to be controlled by the performer (I speak from experience), otherwise a sharp pull in the wrong direction can reveal the inner workings.

I recently bought this effect, but have a question for others who own and perform it. When raising the blade right before the penetration, how do you position it? If the audience were to see you raise the blade straight on, wouldn't you flash pretty badly? Am I performing it wrong? Any thoughts would be welcome.

Hi Resway. When I raise the blade with my right hand, my left hand holds the base (backhand toward the spectator, thumb to the left and fingers to the right)so he won't see the hole. With practice, this movement will take no more than 2 sec., so the spectator won't notice anything.

For wooden IP, buy only the Viking original.
Many copies, but quality is not equal. CC |
