It depends on if they're optical sensors or heat. Optical sensors will definately go off, but heat usually don't.

Knowing from having a fog machine and playing around with it.I know that my machine needs to be about 1 foot away from the smoke detector to make it go off. Also I have filled my room with fog and even with two working smoke detector nothing happen. So I think you are safe.

In my experience, it depends on the smoke detector like Bill stated above. It's always best to inquire when you arrive and test the fog during set-up prior to the audiences arrival.
Oil based fog juice seem to set a larger percentage of alarms off than water based fog juice. Most newer fog machines today use water based juice. It's a bit embarrassing when the alarm goes off just as you're going in to your finale (and I speak from personal experience!) - so ALWAYS TEST! Lyndel |

I was most thinking of sprinklers because if they go off, everything is ruined.
Thanks for the replies, Cameron

Also,
WATCH OUR FOR BUBBLE MACHINES! If you get soap into the wrong place it can burn and the smoke not only smells horrible, but will very easily set off the alarm....This I also know from experience...

I have a water based fog machine that can and has set off smoke detectors that were 50 feet away. The fog was really thick and it did set off an alarm. The sprinkler system did not activate because it works on heat alone..although some may not be setup for heat alone. We had to open a door and a few windows todisapate the fog to stop the smoke alarm from chirping. This was in a medium venue (community center) and the smoke alarm was in the kitchen and I was performing 50 feet from the kitchen. It's best to know the types of alarm systems BEFORE you perfom.

I have filled my room with my fog machine before. The smoke detector is just outside of my room. There is no way to keep the fog from pouring into my hallway even with the door shut. With tons of fog in the hallway, my smoke detector has never gone off.

Thanks Jim but what I'm Most concerned with is the sprinklers.

Sprinklers should never be set off with a smoke machine, only if they are wired to the smoke detectors somehow, but I have never come across this. The way they work is that they have a water pressure behind them and a small glass vale to hold it back, when the heat heats up the glass, it bursts and the water comes out, smoke alone cannot do this, despite what you see on the movies. hope that helps,

Sprinkler system needs to be heated in order to activate. they were not designed to detect smoke but rather to detect heat cause by fire. so it is safe to use smoke machine w/ sprinklers in the building. but don't use smoke machine w/ smoke detectors around. smoke detectors were designed to detect smoke period!
