Canal escapes...forget it. I have done three so far in the Kennet and Avon canal and one escape was for HRH at the opening of the new locks at Devizes in Wiltshire. The water is polluted through being stagnant, your skin will change a dirty shade from the natural muck that such canals garner—look at the bottom of any lock gate. You will be lucky to keep your mouth shut all the time...and you won't want to swallow at all, believe me. The Thames is even worse, I know because I've done that as well. Also, the amount of publicity you receive will depend on other news-worthy things taking place in your area at the same time.
I received a dislocated knee from the first jump which made a weakness in that knee which has been now dislocated eight times...I can now tell when the weather is going to change, the pain tells me. It's doubtfull you will get permission—I couldn't, but still did it, because I'm a pratt. No insurance company will cover you, at least not in the U.K., and the new waterway fines should put you off anyway. Sure do your escape but try a gravel pit or man-made lake and jump from a crane or copter—you will get permission, even sponsorship, and give yourself a better chance—and if you fail, you will at least be clean!! Best of luck (break a leg). |

Hi all
Thanks for all the new replies. It is good to see this thread resurface. Hernan, I like the faking it idea. Especially if we just went out and filmed something to use in the show. This is not only possible for us—I have the required kit, including a half-decent video camera and a bag designed for taking it underwater—but it could be workable in the time frame. At least maybe. The reason I have pulled back on the bridge jump is mainly time and other commitments. Right now I have a large theatre show to plan, a smaller club show, a 15-20 date club tour and several other smaller bookings. All that is between September and November alone. Plus I have just been asked if I would be interested in taking an act over to Lake Tahoe in Nevada for a three-day run. They want to fit that in before November as well. I am run ragged!!! So please don't think I am just being evasive or have bottled out. Kondini, I would love to hear more of your experiences, maybe sometime we can meet up? I think your gravel pit idea is supurb and I will really think on it when the winter is over. The "canal" in question does not pose any of the pollution problems, thankfully. It was the waterway used for the commonwealth games triathlon and the world triathlon is starting there soon. It is wide, deep, not tidal and clean. It also has good underwater visability. So I am told. Unlike most canals, you could actually drink a pint of it and not get sick. However, I think your location idea is far more workable and attractive. Thank you. Cheers all David Straitjacket

If you weave video projection into your production then there are all sorts of show business.
Do a little skit about jumping (complete with crying mom.) Then have a shot representing what you would look like plummeting towards the water. As you "hit the water" (in the video), in real life you tear through the paper projection screen. I hope that makes sense. The video of the jump is projected onto a paper screen. Okay, common stuff, I know, so lets turn this scenario 90 degrees. Slant a second screen above the first screen (lets say 45%) so that a second projector projects a video that can be seen by the whole audience. It doesn't have to be a video, it could be a host of special effects that portray splashing into a river. This second screen you tear through—not the first—but this time you are suspended. From which you effect a truly dramatic *death defying* escape. Here is something I was delighted by. In a hi-tech, multi-media theater they sprayed water onto the audience at moments when the stage show was spraying "bug spray". The whole audience jerked back, some cried...some ran out of the theater. When you "splash" into the canal, stagehand(s) could spray water. A loud sound system with plenty of subwoofer would seal the illusion. In my opinion, a little part of you will die if you do not bridge-jump. Also, I was under the delusion that the goal was to be free of restraints before you hit the water. I guess I was wrong. It would be a consideration. |

Check out the latest issue of Genii and read how Soloman did a bridge-type jump, landed in the water hitting a submerged shopping cart, became disoriented and almost died and the sudden pressure change resulted in a perforated eardrum. You may want to refer to my earlier post on this subject within this thread.

As someone who has jumped off bridges for purposes of scaring the **** out of myself while swimming:
Don't forget that even though you swam it one hundred times last week, and they held the triathlon there yesterday, *today* could have entirely different circumstances in the water. A tree, or dead sheep, could have gotten in and floated down. Brush might have accumulated, changing the water flow and direction. Jumping off a bridge here, a man almost died two weeks ago because he forgot this: the water level changes through a season. At different times of the year (or even of the DAY if it's controlled from a dam) the water level is different. Also -- to avoid getting caught up in the dam structure itself, think about doing the downstream side of it. There is no safe way to jump from a bridge. |

While I've done a dock dive, a boat dive, and diving off rocks into the ocean, I have never done a bridge dive. About 90% of all my (maybe 30-40) underwater escapes were done in backyard swimming poools. I was just wondering, and curious as to wether why (or why not) you just don't use a big swimming pool somewhere? Surely they would be just as impressed I think, and maybe even more so, as they can "kinda" view you as you escape. I'm writing this just to let you know after not reading the above ^ in a while so maybe your reason is already posted. Good luck, and you'll be in my prayers nevertheless, Ed, (Eddini).
