One of my favorite such effects is "Pangmaster" in his book, "Thabbatical". It starts out with a set of tiles that have pagan terms on one side, and single letters on the other. The tiles are eliminated randomly, one at a time. When only one tile is left, the letters on the eliminated tiles are shown to spell out the word on the remaining tile.

The two chapters in "Thabbatical", by the way, are:
