Hi everybody. Czech Republic isn´t a big country but also isn´t the country of the third world. I¡d like to know, what you know about my country. Some people here think that people from the rest of the world know nothing about us and on the other hand we know about each country in the world. Please, write here what you know about my country without using some sources. Just in this moment. Write for example where it lies, or president´s name or whatever you want. I want to prove that the rest of the world is also well-educated like we are :o))

Let’s see what I can remember off the top of my head.
The Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004 (or was it ’03). The capital is Prague, which has a nice blend of the old world (lots of castles dating from the Middle ages) and the new. The country is bordered on the northeast and east by Germany and northwest by Poland. Austria is to the south and Slovakia is southwest (and was formerly a part of a total country called Czechoslovakia formed after World War One and continued as a unified country during the Soviet era). Following World War Two it fell under the Soviet influence. I think (but am not positive) that the current President’s name is Klaus (or is he a Prime Minister?). I remember that in 1968 Czechoslovakia was invaded by the Soviets because the country was becoming too independent and liberal. If I remember correctly Czechoslovakia gained its independence from the Soviets in 1988 or 89. I do clearly remember that the country split into two countries (The Czech Republic and Slovenia) in 1993 How close am I? How did I do?

Wow, very good information and very good memory.Only details:
-joined EU in 2004 - we are bordered by Germany on the northwest and west.Poland is on the north.Slovakia is on the east. -you are right.Klaus is the president of CR. -the "velvet revolution" was in 89. -be aware of a difference between Slovenia and Slovakia. The federation was CzechoSLOVAKIA. Harry, my assessment for you is A, because nearly everything was right. |

The original pilsner beer - Pilsner Urquell - comes from Plzen, Czech Republic.
My paternal grandmother's family - Kozak - also comes from Czech (originally Bohemia). |

Man oh man was my geography off! Of course Germany is Northeast/East! In my mind I was standing in Germany and trying to remember where the Czech Republic was.
Velvet Revolution! I totally forgot that is what it was called. I have always loved the poetic image and juxtaposition of that name “Velvet Revolution”. I need a refresher course on my geography and history! Prague is one of the European capitals that I would like to visit! It is on my list of places to visit.

Harry.
Of course, I haven´t seen many european cities yet, but still I think Prague is one of the most beautiful cities all around the world. If you want to experience what the feeling of real magic is, come to Prague. Prague is very magical. |
