James, I agree that compared to losing one's home, family and health that an overnight 60% rise in gasoline prices is trivial in the extreme. However, for the rest of us life goes on and these issues are worthy of discussion. Those of us who can help are doing all we can for those devastated by this disaster... whether or not they're a part of the magical brotherhood. Our ability to extend this support is a direct result of the successful management of our businesses and is directly dependent upon our keeping these businesses afloat through a clear economic crisis.
Helping one another with suggestions & experience-driven guidance is what this forum and the brotherhood is all about. So yes...to our Gulf Coast brothers & sisters, our concerns over increased gasoline, shipping and product prices will appear trivial. God bless & help them all. But, by staying on top of things and helping each other through this trivial economic crisis, we keep the overall structure healthy and strong...for this and future emergencies. I share your concerns. I echo your prayers. Thanks to each of you for your guidance and support...small & large! :o) Skip

Skip,
I agree. You're absolutely right. I guess I had just got up and turned on the tv and was saddened by the news reports. It's true that this is a good forum to share strategies. For those of you who haven't seen it, there is a good thread on gas prices in the Tricky Business forum you might like to read... http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......4&14 With regards to gas prices, I think they have been artificially high for some time. Why else would the gas companies be reporting record profits? Unless we get someone in Washington who will stand up to these thieves, I suspect the prices will keep rising. Enron was the tip of the iceberg. Best, James |

Hello Friends:Do high gas prices have you sweating sponge balls? Does the high price of fuel have you choking your rubber chicken?Do you find yourself offering to perform some cool tricks for the gas station attendant for a lower price. Is that what's troubling you binky? Well, lift your head up high there is a whole new world before you!!!
How? I will tell you how.And being a cautious person and not wanting to violate any Café' policies,(I ask you to)do a Google search for the top Gasoline suppliers in the US...AND...DON'T purchase your gas from them.[They must be hit hard in the pocketbook)And tell your friends and family the same.If the GAS Bigboy's are avoided they will have to lower their price to compete, and then the Gas Little boy's will follow.[We the consumers have the ultimate power]This solution depends on MASS PROMONTION OF THIS INFORMATION,and we as a powerful faction can do our part.WE MEET PEOPLE up close and personal, and in our own creative way's we can change things!!!As well as each of us e-mailing just 10 friends and asking them to do the same.[10x10x10x10x10x10x10x10x10x10 ect.]Oh, I am getting a Magical rush! ARE you ready BINKY? All the best. Rich |

Who remembers when in 1997 all the big players and financial big wigs were saying that the price of gold was going to be in a permanent bear market (go down) because there is always more gold coming out of the ground? Who profited? The swiss government was just about to sell its gold reserves as were some other countries and the financiers wanted the price to go down.
Now with the oil no one is able to determine how much oil there is and if we really have past the peak production. So there is a lot for the oil companies to gain by suggesting that there is an oil shortage. Of course there might really be one. I wish I had a car that didn't need gas. We've been looking around for another car because we need to replace our 17 year old van. But they all use gas. But what if oil runs out... |

Thank you Kyle,
for your extremely judgemental post last week, and the equating my home town of Las Vegas and the great city of New Orleans to Soddom and Gamora. I'm sure that's what Harry Anderson, Jon Rauchebaumer, and dozens of others in our ranks who call "The Big Easy" their home, need to hear right now. You may wish to visit such wonderful places before casting judgement. Keith Stickley http://howtobookfestivals.com

Funny how nobody notices things until they are brought up with a giant tag on them that leads to a blog spot...hmmm
Anyways...I just said it was something I was thinking about, and everyone has a right to think..never said that I believed it...and New orleans was no where near as bad as soddom and gamora...And I did not compare Vegas to soddom and gamora...I made a reference to "Baby Vegas" which is what New Orleans has been called on many occasions. I never said anything about vegas itself...that was somebody else. It seems to me that you took literally the things I did not say...which is hard to do but has been done by you and I commend your great talent of being able to interpret things that were never said! SHEESH! AND...just by saying that I was "thinking" about a place being bad does not make me "think" that every person living there is bad! I love to hear Fats Domino sing (also a resident of new orleans), and Harry Anderson was a great magician and addition to the magic community...don't hear about him much anymore, but what can I say? Oh, and by the way, I think Las Vegas is a beautiful place and I do have plans to visit the city in the future! ~Kyle~ |

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Harry Anderson is STILL a great magician. Unless of course you were "thinking" something else........

Of course Harry Anderson is still a great magician. I really enjoyed watching the effects that I have seen him perform. I just haven't heard much about him lately...

I think Vegas is very artificial and New Orleans has a je ne sais quoi about it. The culture/people are definitely unique and the french quarter is a special place. This is why Harry chose to move back there. It's like a little Europe in the US.
Hopefully they are alright and will have Oswalds running in no time. Great people. Ellen http://home.twcny.rr.com/kotzin/harryfanpage.htm |

Actually I have been to both places and wouldn't consider it such an incorrect statement Keith.

Back on track to the original post (and I will defend New Orleans and say that the "red light" district of New Orleans is very, very small in comparrison to the majority of beauty of that old city....you can go to other cities in America and find much larger "red light" districts)...
I do believe that Katrina has effected my own business. I do school and library shows...and I market all the way into New Orleans. Ask me if I've received all my mailings back from there...yes I have. Ask me if I've gotten any calls from the customers there I love so much...no I have'nt. Granted, the catastrophe that has befallen New Orleans and the Gulf Coast FAR outweighs the small, minute tragedy of not getting any sales calls from there....overall, for my family, the rise in gas prices and the loss of even a few shows from this area put a hole in our budget that I truly wish was not there. At the same time, gas prices have put another dampner on what was already a sleight "crunch" in business this year from the crappy economy. While I believe there are shows out there to get, I have found my clients with tighter budgets this year...so I have to market even more. And of course this means spending more on marketing. I thank God every day for being in this business and for my clients, don't get me wrong. I'm grateful. There is no denying the fact, looking at my books and talking to my clients, that Katrina has helped put a pinch on my business. Not to mention the cut in various programs in the schools and libraries that already existed! Chris PS> Today is Harry Anderson's Birthday....HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY! Best wishes to you and Elizabeth! |

I wanted to add this...
When I'm defending New Orleans against what was said, I don't want to stamp on Kyle's right to speak his mind. I don't believe in being a coward when it comes to saying what I genuinely believe in. Neither does Kyle, which is why I respect him. I think it's important not to "jump" on people for what they say...and yet to also enjoy our differences as learning experiences, not barriers. I believe this is just God's way of saying "slow down and think for a second!". You notice that the area (new orleans) mostly knocked out is full of casinos and home of the mardi gra. Some have nicknamed it "Baby Vegas". I am beginning to believe that God hit it on purpose as a sign...similar to Soddom and Gamora. But this is just some things I have been thinking about... Kyle. Grow up. |
