I am just beginning my aquaintence with the shells, and have a question about the pinch.
My trouble is in getting the pea high enough up (vertically) in bewteen the thumb and bent forefinger. When performing while standing, the base of my thumb is quite far above the table, and often the pea winds up barely pinched and dangling. I notice that in the School for Scoundrels DVD (excellent close-ups), Whit Haydn dips the base of his thumb towards the table as he pushes the shell forward. This looks natural, and it gets the base of the thumb closer to to the table for a more "embedded", higher pinch. Do other people place the length of their thumb (and perhaps the base of their palm) flat on the table? This seems necessary for what the DVD calls the deep pinch, where the pea is pinched at the thumb knuckle. It's great to have access to a forum where distinguished practitioners comment. |

In general, the hand rests on the table, so yes, you are right; the lengh of the thumb is traditionally on the table.
The Deep pinch is a position that allows for much more playing with the pea (IMHO). Such as thumb palming, or clipping between the fingers. For $7, a very good, worthwhile book to get is Tom Osborne's book, The Three Shell Game. It is a small green book about 60 pages in length but contains a lot of great information on not just the handling of the pea and shell, but the handling of the spectators, and their thoughts. Talk to Whit Haydn though, he is here on the Café, and knows aaaa lot. good luck!

Try changing the position of your hand on the shells and then always grab it that way.
