One man illusion shows can get expensive, if you do it right. Besides the costs of any props, you may also need a good sound system, curtains, backdrop, lights, and of course transportation. The biggest drawback I have experienced is that most routines need to be choreographed, which is not bad once you get it down. My DMX lights are perfectly in sync with my soundtrack (Thanks to Kevin/Living Illusions) with the use of a computer program. My soundtrack is also on the computer. My curtains are also DMX controlled and preprogrammed to operate. Some routines are choreographed very tightly, like my Vern the Bird routine, and others are open for some ad-lib but still structured so they stay in time with the soundtrack, sound effects, ect.
Some of the cheaper 1 Man illusions use a prop called HANDZ UP, a bowling ball production from a paper sack (Anderw Mayne), BISECTION (Andrew Mayne), Kings Rising (Levitation), and a Black Art disappearance while standing on a chair in the middle of the stage. Honestly, BA is the way to go with a 1 man illusion show. You already control the lights, have a backdrop, ect. Most of the most magical looking 1 man illusions are simple once you realize the power of BA. As mentioned above by Lou, Peter Marvey uses ALOT of BA in his shows. Good Luck! |

WHAT ???? Did I read fantastic floatation on the list up here. LOL. I consider that effect a big rip off. Considering what you get for the price you pay. Its one of the most impractical effects ever. Im telling you becxause I bought it. And had to throw it in the bin. The materials supplied and the way in which he expects you to mould them itself are impractical to the core. You better be a plastic moulding specialist for that to work. Most of steve Fearsons effects released to the general magic fraternity are rubbish. The good ones he gives to DC and the like.

Plainman007, I disagree with you. The Fantastic Floatation is a great effect and an audience baffler. Indeed, you have to modify it for your size and use. It is also the way the laser cutting illusion is built.

Lou > have you actually done that. Yes I know how laser works too. But uve actually done the leg thing with those shoelaces holding the knees etc. And you walked around "naturally" as he advertises. Amdist a group and performed it ? LOL. If you did you deserve a medal for that. But I'm glad you coudl at least get something out of it. As far as I'm concerned I cud have spent on some good books. But everyones opinions vary. It was a very wobbly thing to work with. The *** plastic plate woudldnt bend no matter what heat I applied to it. Hair Heater. Actual fire blower. The only thing I didn't try was putting it into the microwave. The *** thing woudl be back flat the next morning. I guess you got lucky.

Just my opinion, but the first (and only) time I saw Steve do this I saw through it right away, and I think any reasonable layperson would, as well. Weak trick, imo devloped just to sell to magicians and not to really perform.

Intersting, how magicians think and how the lay person thinks could be the same and many times is completly different. I think the effect of the legs depends on the performer. Perhaps when Steve came up with this it was somethign that fit him very well. Yes magicians can see right thru things but then that is because we know how things work. Sometimes the simpler the effect the more belivable it is to the audience.

LACI> it asks for a password to enter his site !
What a way to host a site. You take the trouble to put up a site. Then ensure not many people get to see it. |

Plainman007, believe it or not I even wore it while driving. My pants were rather baggy and no one noticed it even up close. I had a special pant tailor made for this effect. As for the plastic sheet, I used 1" wide aluminum flat bar riveted to the plastic sheet to hold its form. I also reinforced the pivot joints. I don't perform it any longer cause my legs aren't that athletic anymore.

Plainman007 - loved reading about magic well before I got into performing so the password was no trouble - Don't find magic any fun if it's just a rush to find out how tricks work.
And sometimes where so busy with 'tricks' and gimmicks we miss the real magic around us .... like ..... google I think it's excellent that he goes to a little effort to ensure he's not giving anything away to anyone who's not really interested |

DMX lighting? interesting... you mean you can have your lights pre rpograms via a computer program? I would like to learn more as I am putting together a minimalist one man show.
