At the moment I'm getting my first kid show ready and getting all of the tricks together. Do any of you think it would be all right to use the change bag for two tricks or should I just use it for one! Thanks

Sure, just don't make the change bag the trick, make it something that just happens to be used during the trick. I always use it twice during a show and it has never been an issue.

I agree with Steve on this--as long as the Change Bag is just a step along the way and not the end itself, I say go for it.

I perform a routine where three rings of wool become one. I believe it is called "Wooley Rings". I use a change bag but when I pull out the one ring, I make it look like three as it comes out. I then have the child wave the wand one more time and make them become one. This takes the heat off the change bag and allows me to use it again if I want.

I think what people are saying is to to use the change bag as a prop that is not the essential part of the effect of the trick but becomes more of a holder that you use through out your show. Much like a table or a bag, the change bag becomes something they get used to seeing and so the heat gets taken off of it.

I think its also important that the audience think that you are using the same bag twice rather than using two bags.

If you using any change bag, it is better if you have something in it, then take it out,...then show the bag empty. there are lots of variations of change bags, so you can use different one also.
The biggest drawback with the standard (Cheap $15-$20 Made in India type) is I have had several kids say, I got one of those. I beginning to think this is a little to popular. I still use it and it does have some nice routines with it.

I think if you have a nice one, and if you use it periodically through out the show as a holder for a silk or to go and get something out of, then you start to show the audience that the object is just a retainer you use for stuff.
If you are not paying much attention to it early in the show, then the audience becomes acustomed to seeing it and they basically let down their guard over the course of the show because the bag has been seen several times before. This way when you actually do magic with it in the end, it becomes more suprising for them. Kyle

Speaking as the devils advocate, I think that you shouldn't use a prop more than once in a show. There are so many tricks/props/routines out there why should you need to repeat? Personally I use my 3-way as the centre piece of a 15 minute routine and make a big point of it being a MAGIC bag and therefore MAGIC things happen. It's probably my strongest trick and the children love it but I would never consider using it twice.

If you are using the change back as the center of the effect at hand, then doing it twice is very much counter productive. However, if you want to use the bag to get a bigger reaction at a certain point in your show, then I think you can do so by using the bag in various ways throughout the show leading up to the actual effect.
By this I mean that the children see you using the bag for getting things out for the next trick. To them it becomes a mere receptical for you to get stuff from. By not paying much attention to it, you are sort of telling the kids that the object is not of much magical importance. Then when you actually do the trick, the trick itself may get a stronger response from the children because they will not feel that the magic happened because of this bag prop. It really comes down to what effect you want to try and achieve with your show. Kyle

Hi All, I agree with Bob (Wellington) on the type of bag.
There are so many cool gags possible with three compartments and a zipper. With the zipper you can get your finger stuck, act freaked out as their hand comes out of the bottom, shake their hand or give them five as it comes out again, have multiple appearances of entirely unrelated stuff from the compartments, put the actual stuff in and have it fall out the bottom while you talk to the audience, get your finger stuck while closing it again. You can get quite a few minutes of byplay out of it.
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

Another funny bit of business is when the zipper is open, you reach your hand in as you turn to the side to talk to the helper., After looking back and seeing an arm or hand stciking out the bottom, you act surprised. You turn to the helper and state, "Wow, no wonder it is not working, there is a person stuck inside my bag. Not to worry Timmy. I will get him out. " You start tugging and pulling on your own arm and this will often times bring lots of laughter and giggles from the kids until you realize that it is your own hand at which you wave hi to the helper and continue on with the show.

That also sounds cool too Kyle. I'll have to give it a go.
It's funny how often it's not how many tricks you do with something, but how many bits of business you can fit in... Generally I'd rather see one trick with some interesting bits of business than a couple of competently performed effects. I think that this is especially true with children's magic. Best Wishes,
May your fingers never lose their deftness,
May your tongue always lead them down the garden path... Regards, Whiterabbit |

Nigel - By using the same prop more then once you make it seem more ordinary and functional. Since the change bag does the trick but not the magic, making it looking boring is a plus!
For example, I introduce a small wand which is gimmicked prop vital to one particular routine. I use it a few times in other routines to make it seem mudane. When it does the magic later on, no one thinks of the wand! After the show, I'll often fill my change bag will balloons! After all, its just a bag! BTW - at christmas, I fill the bag with different colour lollies but pluck out the green ones and put them in the other side. I then say "People who take the green ones have been naughty and will get NO presents this year." The kids get every colour but green and the parents (particularly the dads) get green! |

I asked for a three compartment change bag at the Abracadabra shop and they almost laughed me out of town.
I still have three things in it, just one is piled on top of another. |

Nicholas:
Thank you for saying what I wanted to say but doing so much easier and clearer then I did. hehe That is exactly what I was trying to get out. By using the bag throughout the show, you can get to really show them that it is ordinary without every even saying so. In a way you take the heat off of this object because you have used it before and the kids have seen you use it in a normal fashion. Then when the magic does happen, it seems to the kids that it is not because of the bag but because of something else. White Rabbit: You are right. It really is the journey over the effect that the kids really often enjoy more. I like to have fun with the children and get them to have fun with what I am doing. I try to get laughs when I can and I try often to poke the fun at me instead of my helper. The change bag is a great way to accomplish this. You can get laughs with the zipper going on your finger. You can get laughs when finding another person in the bag. But you can also empower the child when in the end he or she does the magic to your surprise. Kyle
