This is a great thread. Thanks to all who have contributed so far.
I am working in the field of public relations and marketing since 1997. I am always looking for new ways to maximize my performance business. After looking at some of the marketing books for magicians out there it became clear to me, that most did a pretty good job collecting marketing, PR and sometimes self-help advice and applied them for the niche market of magicians who want to make money / more money with performing. If you want to get the information with the right spin, go for the "magicians" products out there. If you are willing to spend time and effort to adjust some of the more general advice for yourself, you might spend more time, but might save some money. The general books mentioned in this thread are all highly recommended. I want to add one more VERY worth reading: "FOOL-PROOF MARKETING, 15 Winning Methods for Selling Any Product or Service in Any Economy" by Robert W. Bly, ISBN 0-471-23609-8, Paperback, $16.95. Robert Bly is a copywriter and consultant and the author of over fifty books (i.e. The Copywriter's Handbook, Co-author of Public Relations Kit for Dummies). His works are all filled with in-depth advice and simple and effective strategies. Check out his website with a lot of free articles: http://www.bly.com Here is another great resource about marketing: http://www.psychotactics.com/index.htm This is a very interesting and helpful website. Make sure to read the free articles about marketing and branding. You get top advice from Sean D'Souza, the author of that site. If you are interested in his e-books, get the "Brain Audit" first.

Thanks, Zak!!
Zak, do his methods really work? Some say the direct market approach doesn't work. Chris

Direct marketing always works...
Provided you have the right lists and the right offer. Any time something has not worked for me, I have to admit that it has always come back to being my fault. Having said that, I have made outrageous amounts of money when I got the formula right. I recently sent out a sales letter to 26 very specific and highly targeted prospects and booked 6 shows. That's a 23% response rate, which is pretty darn high. But the return on investment was shocking. Direct marketing is highly profitable. BTW, I know Randy Charach. He is a millionaire, and he did it by peforming shows. He's the Bill Gates of magic entrepreneurs. I respect Zacks review. But I encourage you to get it and read it before making a judgement. I don't know Dave Dee. I like some of his products. His stuff *has to work*, because it's based on Dan Kennedy's materials. And Dan Kennedy is a highly respected marketer and wealthy man. His Magnetic Marketing Tapes are excellent. Can't go wrong either way. Sincerely, Blair Rapid Stage Hypnosis Inductions Revealed: www.Mental-List.com/masterhypnosis.htm |

Blair says of Randy Charach:
" He's the Bill Gates of magic entrepreneurs." This is something that I hear over and over again and it bewilders me. Is this meant as sarcasm? Do you mean to say that Randy Charach is a plagerist who uses leverage and market share to to create a monopolistic hegemony that entrenches obviously inferior products resulting in an anti-trust suit? Or do you just mean he has a bad haircut? Chris: There's much more to Dave Dee than direct marketing. And yes, direct marketing, done properly, DOES work. I'll try to dig up my review of Dave's stuff. |

I went back and checked my edition of "Secrets," and found that Randy did reference NACA, although not APCA. In my opinion omitting APCA is a relatively minor problem for such a general book, but still it would be better had it been included. Also, the list of agencies in the edition I have is quite a bit larger than the one you apparently had. I'd guess it contains about 60 listings. Most of the agencies that are likely to book novelty acts are included, although I am sure there are plenty of ommissions here, too. A fair number of names and phone numbers are now out of date. I did call a couple of the agents that I know to ask them if they received any compensation for being listed, and the answer was 'no.' A vastly more complete list could be obtained from joining NACA. --Chris |

My personal choice has always been to go to the source of information. I love Randy's stuff, and I love Dan Kennedy stuff. I admire Dave Dee's marketing tenacity and his success as a marketer. He's done exceptionally well for himself and he deserves credit for that. I'm sure you are being sarcastic about plagiarism. But of the two, Randy has not "plagiarized". (Nor has Bill Gates). I fail to see your "bewilderment". It seems contradictory to me. Blair Stage Hypnosis Secrets Revealed:www.Mental-List.com/masterhypnosis.htm |

I did not mean to imply that Randy was a plagerist. The remark was directed at Bill Gates. I was surprised that anybody would use Gates as a favorable comparison.

I own Randy Charachs work as well as Jim Snacks Success in Magic. Success in Magic is what I was hoping for and expecting when I purchased Millionaire Magician. I would definitely suggest purchasing Jim Snacks work if you were making a first purchase. I would recommend it even if you already purchased Millionaire Magician. Dave Dee presents good marketing material if you are new to marketing but I would suggest CJ Johnsons More Show, More Money over Dave Dee's material.

Randy's work contains tons of contacts (probably the highlight of the book), but it is mainly targeted to US performers
