My good friend, Doc Walton gave me a sponge tooth and I love it! Why? Because it's a tooth made out of sponge, that's why. It's a pretty big tooth, far larger than a normal tooth, which equals funny. However, I am at a total loss as to what to do with it!
I can see its potential, truly I can, buried deep within its spongey little soul. So far all I have come with is a gag where I talk about how somebody hit me and knocked my tooth out, then I show it to them. Seriously. That's all I've got. Of course, it's funnier if you picture it in the middle of my usual sponge ball routine. Anyway... I need the assistance of my fellow magic nerds to help me come up with some ideas as to truly use this odd little object to its potential. Any ideas, gang? Muchas gracias in advance! -Reis O'Brien |

Years ago I saw a kit for sale that was marketed somehow to dentists to help take the fear away from kids and adults. The large sponge tooth was a part of the kit. I don't recall where I saw this advertised, but you might score if you look in the old MUM and Linking Ring magazines. I'm not sure if it was there, but its a good start.
Here is a rough idea that needs some work. The idea is basic, and maybe not politically correct these days- but it might give you a few idea's as a starting point. All you need is a paper bag, a set of sponge banana's and a large tooth. Idea: A story where you recall what happened to you when you finally fought back against that bully in school. Story: "Billy was much larger than I was and he used to push me down and take my lunch every day. The teachers couldn't do anything, and my dad gave me advice but I was afraid to use it." "Banana's are my favorite and one day I had a whole bunch(show the paper bag "loaded"). When lunch time came around I tried to hide, but Billy found me just as I was taking the bite of the first banana. He pushed me down and began giving my banana's to his friends. He gave one to John, and another to Mark, Ben and Joe before eating the last one(do standard routine and crumble bag)." "Not being able to take it anymore I closed my eyes and swung as hard as I could finally standing up for myself when all else failed. When I opened my eyes I saw Billy holding his mouth and you'll never guess what was in his hand..(production of large tooth)." "Later I got detention for fighting and Billy got the bag for his tooth(pickup the tooth and put in bag)...but he never took my lunch again." Feel free to adapt it to your needs if you would like to use it; just do me a favor and keep it between us. ;)

You know that perpetual sponge-in-mouth routine? The one that Patrick Page, and I guess just about everybody else, shows? Open your mouth, a sponge pops out, take it with your hand, put the sponge in your pocket, another pops out, take it with your hand, put it in your pocket, another pops out, take it...
How about after 3 or four of those a TOOTH pops out. Seems a good way to put an end to that segment. (If you aren't familiar with that phase PM me) |

Perhaps you can do something with the tooth fairy? ... You could say how the tooth fairy has been giving you a tough time lately. You lost a tooth and put it under a pillow (literally or just in your hand) and it keeps disappearing but you find nothing in return. You could pretend to pull another tooth out of your mouth, think better of the idea, and decide to pull a tooth out of your spectator's mouth instead. I'm picturing a funny moment where you reach for some scary looking pliers.... You put their tooth under the pillow (or in the hand) and a large coin appears in its place! No fair! How come it doesn't work with your tooth? You could try one more time, this time pulling the tooth from your mouth. You put the tooth under the pillow (or in your hand), look after a moment, and the surprise is..... Hmmm, I'm not sure what you've got. A sponge fairy because you've caught her? Some candy? A toothbrush? A bunch of little teeth? An I.O.U. from the tooth fairy? Well, it might be a start...

These are some brilliant ideas, gang! Thank you tons and tons for your posts!
Rikbrooks and Chris, you guys have giving me some great ideas and it's much appreciated. Rikbrooks, I have never seen the effect, but I think I have the basic idea. Chris, structuring a story/concept like the one you suggested is right on target. Thanks again all! -Reis O'Brien |

Tie it to a piece of twine and hide the sponge in your hand. Pretend to fasten the free end to a tooth. When you go to pull the string, switch the sides and it looks like you pulled a giant tooth out of your mouth. I used this for a long time to great success in my kidshows. It's a fun visual gag that catches 'em by surprise!
Good luck! |

You could use it with the needle trick. Have it attached to the end of the string that you thread the needles on to. Pull out the needles, and then notice that the string is stuck, tug, tug , YANK!.
You wouldn't necessarily have to put the tooth in your mouth to do this.

Yep, I have the 2 inch tooth, Starsini. A great little prop.
Mr. Palmer, that is a genius idea! I already do the razorblade trick (similar to needle trick). And once again, Andini, I gotta say that I like the way you think! |
