I am currently drawing up plans to build a production box. I was planning on building it 12"x12"x12". I am familiar with the principles used, but haven't had one in my hands. What angle does the gimmick need to be set at in order to work properly? also, to achive the correct angle, do the dimentions need to be adjusted?
The woodworking is no problem, I make guitars. But I want to get this right. It will be a simple one with a door top and front and stripes painted inside to conceal the gimmick. I would appreciate anyones assistance and advice. Thanks! Scruffy |

It took me a second to understand the type of box you are making, but I think I have it now.
The sides (left and right) must be square, which means the height and depth must be the same. The length is variable. Your dimensions will obviously work. The gimmick must be set in at 45 degrees, lower back edge to upper front edge. That will give you a right angle interior image, which is what you want. It will also make your front and top doors line up properly. Make a simple cardboard mock up first to see the illusion in action. The actual construction must be carefully considered, such as when is the best time to actually insert the gimmick. Some interior surfaces must be pre-painted to avoid getting paint on the gimmick, but the gimmick must be inserted before the entire box is glued up. Is that making sense? It is probably best to glue in the back panel last, as it will never be seen except possibly from the outside. It is much easier to square off and finish an exterior corner or joint, than an interior one. You may have the gimmick butt against the sides, but you may also wish to route channels to better conceal the edges. The edges are the hardest to conceal as they have differing properties than the main viewable portion. The thinner the gimmick, the less problem with the edge. If the gimmick is front-surfaced, there is no problem, except the cost will rise substantially. If you have more questions that would require detailed answers, take your questions to pmzz.org. We can answer things more openly there, as that site is less apt to get hit on a public search. ~michael

Thanks Michael,
I'm familiar with the painting issues, and the how to hide the gimmick. I hope to route the channels in. I was pretty sure on the angle, but wanted to verify it before I tried anything of a mock up. I will check out the website mentioned! Thank you, Scruffy |
