Hi there
I am have a problem with my Thornton reel, If I pull out maybe 10 feet of thread it stuck sometimes, should mean the thread just fall on the ground and then I have to pull a few times bevor it pulls the thread in. I am afraid to take that reel apart, I tried it with oil but it still did not work right. Any Idears? Thanks for help, I hope me english is not to bad. Greetings from Switzerland Shorty |

Your will have to take it apart to see where it the thread is hanging up. I think it is something more then oil. Vasoline works better for reels anyway.

Shorty;
You may merely need to incresae the tension on the spring by winding the windlass a little tighter. Once the tension is right, tighten the screw to secure everything. Do not try anything but very light oil on a Thornton. Because of their very special inner construction, Thorntons are very sensitive to friction and vaseline or grease will gum them up. I use sewing machine oil (not 3-in-1 type oil) on my Thorntons - it does not gum things up over time. There is no way to get vaseline or grease into the springs anyway - without completely disassembling the unit. They are not like a regular reel. The thread may have jumped off of the inner drum. If so, open the device by removing the screw and carefully lifting off the top half of the outer case. If the thread has jumped the drum groove, you will see it. When reassembling the windlass, you will have to wind it to set the tension properly. Be certain that you wind the thread the correct direction on the drum! When you open it, mark the drum with a felt tipped marker as to correct direction. I would not suggest that you attempt to disassemble the unit any further. There are two inner springs working in tandem and they can easily fly out into your face. If this happens, you will have a ball of tangled spring steel which will need to be unknotted and rewound under the drum. This task is a pain. Good luck with it. Jim |

Hi
Thanks for answer, I heard that, never take it apart, otherwise you can trow it away. I think I change the thread and wind it a litle more up, I hope it works then. Is it possible that one of that springs inside are broken? Once again thank a lot. Greetings Shorty |

I doubt if a spring is broken. You would need to overwind it in order to break a spring. Never throw a Thornton away! Some of us can put them back together again ;-) Jim |
